Description
Cain, the firstborn son of Adam and Eve after their expulsion from Eden, worked the land as a farmer, enduring the hardship of agricultural labor. His younger brother, Abel, tended flocks as a shepherd.
Conflict arose when both made offerings to God: Cain presented produce from his harvest, while Abel offered the firstborn of his flock. God favored Abel's offering but showed disfavor towards Cain's. This divine preference ignited intense jealousy within Cain. Despite God's direct warning about sin's presence and the need to master his emotions, Cain allowed his resentment to fester.
Consumed by envy and anger over perceived injustice, Cain confronted Abel in a field and killed him, committing the first murder. God confronted Cain for this fratricide and imposed a curse as punishment. Marked by this curse, Cain was exiled from the land he cultivated. He became a condemned wanderer, severed from his family and livelihood, bearing divine condemnation.
Cain's narrative depicts sibling rivalry, unchecked jealousy culminating in violence, and the severe consequences of defying divine will. His story concludes as a foundational example of human moral failure, living out his days as an outcast, severed from his parents and the land.
