Description
Sonohara Mizuka, known as the Pursuit Baron, is one of seven Legendary Red Barons originating from the 13th Special Military Forces School three centuries before the main events. Her Count measures the distance she has pursued targets, defining her role as a tracker and combatant.
Initially a quiet and easily bullied student, she endured harassment from childhood friend Douan Taketora and others. She depended on Sakai Rihito (later Licht Bach) for his consistent protection, an "unhealthy" dynamic noted by observers. Seeking safety near Licht, she enlisted in military training. Taketora repeatedly stole her stars during early school days, forcing her compliance through intimidation.
During the Abandonment War, she underwent augmentation to become a Red Baron alongside Licht, Tokikaze, Taketora, and Alan. Despite enhanced abilities, intense fear prevented her from battle. Licht, descending into bloodlust, severed her left arm, replaced by a cybernetic prosthetic. The war and injury left her mentally scarred, unaware of the Althing's creation. Post-war, the Special Service exploited her fragility, administering drugs to activate a violent, remorseless secondary personality. In this state, she threatened civilians, including children, to provoke Licht into fighting her.
Her development intensified when future-time-traveler Jail Murdoch intervened during her youth. He provided stars to prevent expulsion and taught that personal conviction fosters strength. Though initially unable to grasp this, his words later reshaped her resolve.
Centuries later, in a berserk state, she massacred civilians and attacked Licht’s companions, demanding death by his hands. After Licht defeated her in a Startheft Bout, her sanity returned, revealing profound guilt over her actions. Jail’s reappearance and Licht’s subsequent defeat further catalyzed her growth. She gradually embraced Jail’s teachings, developing independent resolve and rejecting reliance on drugs to suppress vulnerability.
Later arcs showed her proactively protecting allies, investigating Licht’s apparent death and aiding Hina’s group against the Special Service. Though Taketora’s coercion forcibly reverted her to bloodlust, her core personality exhibited increased resilience compared to earlier breakdowns.
Physically, she has fair skin, blue eyes that shift red during bloodlust, and long black hair typically adorned with a flower clip. She wore a school uniform pre-war and transitioned to a Special Service uniform afterward. The cybernetic left arm remains a permanent reminder of her trauma and conflict with Licht.
