Description
Roronoa Zoro, known as "Pirate Hunter" Zoro, began as a bounty hunter in the East Blue before becoming the combatant and first recruit of the Straw Hat Pirates. Born in Shimotsuki Village to Tera and Roronoa Arashi, his ancestry traces to the Wano Country's Shimotsuki Family, including legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma and granduncle Shimotsuki Ushimaru. Orphaned young after his father died fighting pirates and his mother succumbed to illness, he trained at the village dojo under Koushirou.
There, he dueled frequently with the dojo master's daughter Kuina, his superior in swordsmanship. They vowed one would become the world's greatest swordsman. Following Kuina's fatal fall down the stairs, Zoro inherited her sword, Wado Ichimonji, and forged his signature Three Sword Style—wielding three katanas simultaneously, one held in his mouth. This style defines him. He later left his village seeking the world's strongest swordsman, Dracule Mihawk, but became lost at sea, turning to bounty hunting for survival and earning his "Pirate Hunter" name.
He possesses a muscular build, cropped green hair, three gold earrings on his left earlobe, and numerous battle scars. These include a prominent diagonal slash across his torso from Mihawk and a scar over his left eye gained during two years of training under Mihawk. His typical attire is a white shirt, black pants, a green haramaki sash holding his swords, and a black bandana on his arm that he ties to his head for serious fights. His swords are Wado Ichimonji, Sandai Kitetsu, and Enma, having previously wielded Shusui before its return to Wano.
A defining weakness is his notoriously poor sense of direction, often getting lost in simple environments or misinterpreting basic instructions, necessitating guidance from others. In combat, he demonstrates immense physical strength, endurance, and mastery of Armament, Observation, and Conqueror's Haki. His Three Sword Style incorporates techniques like Oni Giri and advanced Haki applications, such as coating blades with Conqueror's Haki during his battle against King. He adheres to a bushido-like code, refusing underhanded tactics and prioritizing honorable duels against fellow swordsmen.
Within the "Episode of Merry" special, a condensed retelling of the Enies Lobby arc and the Straw Hats' farewell to their ship Going Merry, Zoro battles CP9 agents, defeating Kaku. During the crew's conflict over the deteriorating Going Merry, he insists Usopp must apologize for abandoning the crew before rejoining. He participates in the rescue mission for Nico Robin and fights during the assault on Enies Lobby. The special concludes with Zoro present at the emotional funeral where Going Merry is set aflame.
Throughout his journey, Zoro maintains steadfast loyalty to captain Monkey D. Luffy, serving as his de facto second-in-command. He shares a fierce rivalry with crewmate Sanji, frequently clashing, yet remains deeply committed to protecting all crew members. His core motivation is fulfilling his promise to Kuina by surpassing Mihawk as the world's strongest swordsman, a goal he pursues alongside Luffy's ambition to become Pirate King.
