Description
Jango, also known as the hypnotist, is a character from the East Blue who begins his journey as a pirate and eventually becomes a Marine officer. Before his life of crime, Jango was a wandering dancer struggling to gain fame. His unique hypnotic abilities were acquired not from a Devil Fruit, but from an unusual accident: while sleeping, a striped mushroom grew on his chin, and he ate its cap out of hunger, finding it disgusting yet effective in granting him his powers. Standing at an impressive 207 centimeters, Jango is easily recognizable by his flamboyant appearance, which includes a pair of heart-shaped red sunglasses that hide his similarly heart-shaped pupils. His entire character design, from his mannerisms to his signature backward moonwalk, pays homage to the pop star Michael Jackson.

In combat, Jango wields a sharp ring-like chakram suspended by a string, which he swings as a pendulum to hypnotize his targets. His hypnotic suggestion is accompanied by the verbal cue "One, Two, Jango," and can be used to put people to sleep, enhance their strength, or implant specific commands. A significant drawback to this power is that he is also vulnerable to his own hypnosis. To prevent accidentally hypnotizing himself, he must lower the brim of his hat to cover his eyes just as he finishes his command, though he occasionally forgets this crucial step and falls under his own spell.

Jango's personality is a mixture of carefree flamboyance and quirky bumbling. He is deeply passionate about dancing, treating it as a competitive art form in which he possesses considerable skill. Despite being a somewhat unreliable and easily distracted individual, he has shown moments of bravery and camaraderie, particularly when he chose to return and help a friend in need rather than fleeing to safety. He was intensely loyal to his former captain, Kuro, to the point of following orders even when he knew his captain was capable of harming his own crew.

He serves as the secondary antagonist in the Syrup Village Arc, where he is the first mate of the Black Cat Pirates. He assists his captain, the cunning "Kuro," in a scheme to fake Kuro's death and later to inherit the fortune of a wealthy girl named Kaya. Jango is instrumental in Kuro's initial plan, using his hypnosis on a Marine officer, Captain Morgan, to make him believe a decoy was the real Kuro, thereby erasing Kuro's bounty. Years later, he returns to Syrup Village to help Kuro murder Kaya, but he is eventually defeated by the combined efforts of Usopp and Zoro. After the battle, he is accidentally left behind by his fleeing crew and chased off the island by the Usopp Pirates.

His story, however, does not end there. Abandoned and alone, Jango finds his way to Mirror Ball Island, where he enters a dance contest in disguise. Here, he befriends the Marine officer Fullbody, an unlikely bond formed through their shared love of dance. When pirates attack the island, Jango initially tries to escape but ultimately returns to help Fullbody fight them off. His identity as a pirate is revealed, and he is arrested and sentenced to death. In a dramatic turn of events, Fullbody storms the court to protest the sentence, performing a "friendship dance" that secures Jango's acquittal. Moved by this gesture, Jango decides to hypnotize Fullbody to make him forget their friendship, believing it is for the best. However, before he can complete the hypnosis, both men see the beautiful Marine Captain Hina and become instantly captivated. Their shared admiration for her leads them to abandon their former lives and enlist in the Marines together as privates.

This decision marks a complete reversal in his role. He joins the Marines under Hina's command, serving alongside his best friend, Fullbody. The two have become nearly inseparable, often seen dancing in sync or mirroring each other's actions. While still somewhat clumsy and ineffective, as seen when he accidentally hypnotized Usopp into firing on his own ship, Jango has fully embraced his new career. He is eventually promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander and, despite his past as a pirate with a bounty of nine million berries, he finds a sense of belonging and possibly unrequited affection for his commanding officer, Hina. He later appears as part of the security detail for the World Summit, demonstrating his progression and integration into the World Government's military structure.
