Description
Subaru Sumeragi, head of the Sumeragi clan of onmyōji in *Tokyo Babylon*, originates from the CLAMP multiverse. Born in Kyoto on February 19, 1974, he is the younger fraternal twin of Hokuto Sumeragi. Trained from childhood as the thirteenth clan leader, he dedicated himself to exorcising spirits and helping others. His life altered irrevocably at age nine upon meeting Seishirō Sakurazuka under a cherry blossom tree; this memory was later erased by his grandmother, who commanded him to wear gloves always.

As a teenager in Tokyo with Hokuto, who designed his distinctive clothing, he befriended veterinarian Seishirō, who professed romantic feelings. Subaru gradually developed reciprocal feelings, unaware Seishirō was the emotionless Sakurazukamori assassin. Their relationship centered on a bet: if Seishirō felt affection after living together a year, he would spare Subaru; otherwise, he would kill him. At year's end, Seishirō revealed his identity and attempted murder. Hokuto intervened, dying to protect her brother while casting a spell reflecting any future lethal attack back onto Seishirō. The trauma left Subaru temporarily catatonic; he later became a reserved, chain-smoking adult.

In *X*, Subaru joined the Dragons of Heaven to protect humanity, solely motivated by his unresolved conflict with Seishirō, now a Dragon of Earth. Their final battle at Rainbow Bridge ended with Subaru killing Seishirō due to Hokuto's reflective spell. Seishirō's dying words profoundly affected him. In the manga, Subaru inherited the Sakurazukamori title and became a Dragon of Earth; in the anime, he overcame catatonia to aid Kamui Shiro in the final battle.

Within the Tokyo Revelations OVA arc of *Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle*, an alternate-dimensional Subaru appears as a vampire. Fleeing across dimensions with his twin brother Kamui (an incarnation of Kamui Shiro) to evade Seishirō, who requires Subaru's blood as his "prey" or "E" to survive, Subaru falls comatose at the bottom of Tokyo's reservoir, fiercely guarded by Kamui. During this coma, he psychically urges Princess Sakura to awaken before her consciousness is lost, revealing their shared vulnerable state.

His awakening follows Clone Syaoran retrieving a feather from the reservoir, draining its protective waters. Feeling responsible, Subaru offers to help restore Tokyo's water. Kamui refuses to let Seishirō drink Subaru's blood again and instead gives his own blood to save the dying Fai, transforming Fai into a vampire. Subaru recognizes Sakura and her companions as part of an "event" foretold by dimensional witch Yūko Ichihara, who granted the twins their dimensional travel ability. After these events, Subaru and Kamui depart Tokyo to continue evading Seishirō.

Across all incarnations, Subaru retains a gentle, selfless nature yet exhibits fierce resolve when angered or protecting others. His vampire existence in *Tsubasa* grants him prolonged lifespan, regeneration, inhuman strength, and dimensional travel abilities. His relationship with Kamui reflects mutual devotion, contrasting sharply with his complex, tragic bond with Seishirō.
