Description
Hakase, whose real name is unknown as her title simply means Professor in Japanese, is a central figure in the story. She is an eight-year-old girl with an extraordinary intellect, living in a house labeled Shinonome Laboratories. Despite her genius, she does not attend school, apparently because she has already graduated, and instead spends her days at home. She has long, somewhat unkempt orange hair, blue eyes, and is almost always seen wearing an oversized white lab coat that reaches the ground, resembling a pajama or a large t-shirt, which features a collar and a red tie. A notable cowlick is often visible at the back of her head.
Hakase's personality is defined by a stark contrast between her remarkable intelligence and her childish behavior. She is exceedingly brilliant, capable of creating advanced, sentient robots and other complex inventions. However, in her daily life, she acts like a spoiled child, throwing tantrums and arguing when she does not get her way. She has a short attention span and is easily distracted, often laughing at everything and seeking fun in all situations. Her behavior is not malicious but stems from a genuine, innocent immaturity. For example, she loves snack foods, with omelette rice being a favorite, and has a passionate obsession with sharks, which she loves to draw and collect themed items like Shark Chocolate. Conversely, she has a deep-seated fear of dogs, stemming from a fear of being bitten.
Her primary motivation appears to be the pursuit of enjoyment and entertainment. She invents things not for any grand purpose, but because she thinks they are neat, funny, or cute. This is most evident in her relationship with her greatest creation, the android Nano Shinonome. Hakase constantly installs strange and often impractical functions into Nano, such as a swiss roll dispensing arm or a machine gun in her hand, usually without Nano's knowledge. She also adamantly refuses to remove the obvious wind-up key from Nano's back, insisting it is cute, despite Nano's repeated pleas. This behavior is driven by her own amusement and her genuine, if unconventional, affection for Nano.
In the story, Hakase serves as a catalyst for many comedic situations and the anchor of her unique household. She occupies the role of a creator and a child within her own home. Her actions often directly conflict with the desires of those around her, particularly Nano, who wishes to be seen as a normal girl. A running gag involves Hakase proudly introducing herself as Nano's creator to new acquaintances, completely undermining Nano's attempts to hide her robotic nature. Hakase feels that Nano should be happy to be a robot, declaring that robots are cute, and seems unable to grasp why Nano would want to keep this a secret.
The key relationships in Hakase's life are centered in her home. With Nano, she has a complex but close bond. While she created Nano and sometimes pulls rank as her maker, she also looks up to Nano, who acts as a motherly figure, disciplining Hakase for her bad habits. Hakase is usually well-behaved when Nano scolds her, and it is ultimately Hakase who gives Nano permission to attend high school. Another member of the household is Sakamoto, a black cat. Hakase invented a talking scarf for him simply because she thought it would be neat. However, she quickly found his condescending personality annoying and generally treats him like any child would treat a cat, often ignoring his demands for respect and sometimes accidentally putting him in harm's way. She also frequently tries to blame Sakamoto for her own mistakes, though Nano rarely falls for this. Outside the home, she has a strong friendship with Yuuko Aioi, who shares her playful and childish energy. Her relationship with Mai Minakami starts poorly after an encounter with Mai's dogs, but Hakase quickly warms to her when Mai gives her a drawing of a shark.
Hakase shows little development in the sense of changing her core personality, but she does demonstrate growth in her capacity for care. The most significant example is her decision to let Nano attend high school, recognizing her desire for a normal life, even as she continues her antics at home. Her abilities are considerable, centered on her genius-level intellect in robotics and invention. Beyond creating Nano and the talking scarf for Sakamoto, her other creations include two ineffective Biscuit androids and an enormous tube of Super Glue for a prank. Her inventions are typically characterized by a lack of practical application, existing instead for the sake of a joke or to show off her skills. Even with her advanced knowledge, her childish nature means she most often uses her scientific prowess for simple, playful purposes.
