Description
Takeru Higa serves as Chief Developer of the Soul Translator at Rath, operating under Seijirou Kikuoka on the classified Project Alicization. This project sought to generate bottom-up artificial intelligence by cultivating artificial fluctlights within the Underworld virtual environment, ultimately intended for deployment in unmanned military weapons to enhance Japan's defense capabilities and reduce human casualties in warfare.
He studied at the Shigemura Lab within Touto University of Electrical and Electronic Engineering alongside Akihiko Kayaba, Nobuyuki Sugou, and Rinko Koujiro. The death of a close friend in a war motivated his decision to join Rath and drive technology preventing future human losses. He possesses significant intellectual capability, with an IQ approaching 140.
His appearance features short, spiky blond hair and round-framed glasses. He typically wears casual attire like faded anime-themed T-shirts, three-quarter-length jeans, and sneakers with worn soles, presenting an unassuming, otaku-like demeanor despite his key role.
His primary technical achievement is the Soul Translator (STL), a fourth-generation FullDive machine capable of reading and copying human fluctlights. He also designed the Electroactive-Muscled Operative Machine (E.M.O.M.), a robotic body for artificial fluctlights to operate in reality, nicknaming the models "Ichie-mon" and "Nie-mon." He contributed to Underworld's creation by utilizing The Seed program for its foundation and adapting it for fluctlight synchronization.
Throughout Project Alicization, he monitored artificial fluctlight growth in Underworld and assisted experiments testing their cognitive boundaries. Initially viewing them as artificial constructs, his perspective evolved upon witnessing their development and the actions of test subjects Kazuto Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki, leading him to recognize their humanity and intrinsic value.
During the attack on Rath's Ocean Turtle facility, he played a critical role. Despite injuries, he facilitated connections for Kirigaya, Yuuki, Suguha Kirigaya, and Shino Asada to the Soul Translators and enabled Kirigaya's resurgence by linking him to Eugeo's residual fluctlight fragment. Post-crisis, he secretly copied the fluctlight data of the 200-year-old "Star King" Kirigaya, deeming it too significant to lose, reflecting his commitment to protecting Underworld and its inhabitants.
He maintains professional relationships with Kikuoka (whom he calls "Kiku-san") and Koujiro Rinko, harboring unspoken romantic interest in the latter during university. Alice Zuberg later referred to him as "Higa" and critiqued his robotic designs, prompting him to refine the E.M.O.M. technology for improved functionality. His speech is informal, often ending sentences with "ssu" and using the first-person pronoun "boku".
