Description
Rinko Koujiro studied electrical and electronic engineering at the Toto Institute of Technology, collaborating in the Shigemura Lab alongside Kayaba Akihiko during her college years. Their professional partnership continued into the development of Sword Art Online, though Rinko remained unaware of Kayaba's plans for the game's lethal trapping mechanism.

During the SAO incident, Rinko deduced Kayaba's physical location at a mountain cottage. She intended to confront him with lethal force but ultimately chose to assist in maintaining his physical condition throughout his extended dive. Following the incident's resolution and Kayaba's death, authorities arrested Rinko. Legal proceedings against her were influenced by a fake micro bomb Kayaba implanted near her sternum, designed to create the appearance of coercion. Rinko described this device as the only gift Kayaba ever gave her. After her release on bail and subsequent acquittal, she maintained correspondence with Kirigaya Kazuto (Kirito).

Approximately two years after the SAO incident, Rinko relocated to San Francisco, California. She declined an initial invitation from Kikuoka Seijirou to participate in classified FullDive research. On July 1, 2026, an email from Yuuki Asuna detailing Kirito's critical condition and disappearance prompted Rinko to reconsider. She contacted Kikuoka to accept the position.

Disguised as "Mayumi Reynolds," Rinko accompanied Asuna to the Ocean Turtle, Rath's offshore research facility, on July 5, 2026. There, Kikuoka revealed Project Alicization's true objective: developing advanced bottom-up artificial intelligence using the Soul Translator (STL) within the simulated Underworld. Kirito, suffering severe brain damage from real-world poisoning, was undergoing STL treatment, necessitating his prolonged dive. Rinko provided scientific expertise during this phase, leveraging her FullDive background and understanding of Kayaba's foundational research.

Following the attack on the Ocean Turtle by external forces seeking to exploit Project Alicization's military potential, Rinko assumed leadership in the newly formed Oceanic Resource Exploration & Research Institution. In this role, she publicly unveiled Alice Zuberg, an artificial general intelligence originating from Underworld, to global media. This presentation concluded the covert conflict instigated by the American National Security Agency and its contractors against Rath.

Records indicate Rinko was informed of Asuna's decision to remain within Underworld alongside Kirito due to logout complications. Her actions throughout the Alicization project demonstrated a transition from Kayaba's conflicted associate to an independent scientist facilitating the ethical disclosure of artificial intelligence technology.
