Description
Rinko Koujiro is a scientist who studied at Toto Institute of Technology's Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department within the Shigemura Lab. She first encountered Akihiko Kayaba at eighteen during her college debut, sparking both a professional partnership and personal connection that drew her into the Sword Art Online venture. When SAO trapped players, she tracked Kayaba to his mountain retreat intending to halt the crisis but remained to sustain his body during his two-year dive. Following his death, authorities arrested her but dropped charges after discovering fabricated evidence—a counterfeit micro bomb near her sternum—implying coercion.

Two years post-SAO, she relocated to San Francisco for research, rebuffing Seijirou Kikuoka's periodic appeals to join Project Alicization. In July 2026, Yuuki Asuna contacted her about Kazuto Kirigaya's vanishing, compelling her return to Japan. Disguising Asuna as assistant "Mayumi Reynolds," she infiltrated Rath's Ocean Turtle facility. There, she uncovered Kazuto's critical state and Rath's use of the Soul Translator to mend his brain while accelerating his fluctlight within the Underworld simulation. She contributed FullDive expertise—including insights on her Medicuboid medical VR device, derived from Kayaba's data—and clarified Project Alicization's pursuit of military-grade bottom-up AI for Asuna.

Amid the Ocean Turtle assault by foreign operatives, she advised Rath as hostilities spilled into the Underworld. Afterward, she succeeded Kikuoka as Rath's leader, realigning its mission with Kayaba's initial aspirations. She later orchestrated Alice Zuberg's transition to reality, managing her physical adaptations and enabling her stay with Kazuto's family despite breaching protocols.

Rinko stands petite with olive-greenish-black straight short hair, freckles, and a reserved air. Her analytical precision blends with fierce loyalty, reflected in her conflicted guardianship of Kayaba during SAO and her drive for ethical innovation. She maintains ties with Shigemura Lab junior Higa Takeru and shields younger individuals like Asuna and Alice.

Hailing from rural roots, her motives balance VR advancement with resolving Kayaba-linked traumas. Post-Alicization, she steers Rath toward civilian applications while aiding Underworld refugees.
