Description
Sword Maiden, originally called Female Bishop as an adventurer, is a central figure in the Goblin Slayer universe. Her background stems from a traumatic first adventure where goblins captured her. She endured prolonged rape, torture, and having her eyes burned, resulting in permanent blindness. After escaping, she found her party had abandoned her, leading to rejection by the adventuring community. She initially worked as a Fortress City appraiser before rising to become the influential Archbishop of the Supreme God at the Temple of Law in Water Town.

Her physical appearance features long blonde hair, often braided and adorned with a black bow. Pale blue eyes are concealed by a black blindfold due to her injury. She wears ornate white robes with blue accents and a golden hip decoration. Scarring from her captivity marks her body, though most have healed faintly over time.

Personality-wise, Sword Maiden projects calmness and compassion as Archbishop, masking deep-seated trauma, depression, and an extreme phobia of goblins. Their mere mention triggers trembling and nightmares. Her fear is compounded by societal dismissal, as others cannot reconcile it with her status as a former Gold-ranked adventurer. She exhibits occasional childishness, such as refusing duties to attend festivals, and displays jealousy or possessiveness, particularly toward Goblin Slayer.

As a former Gold-ranked adventurer, she wields formidable abilities. Her miracles include Resurrection (requiring a virgin medium), Appraisal (identifying item properties despite blindness), Protection (creating strong barriers), Silence, Holy Light, and elemental spells like fire. She commands an alligator familiar for combat and patrols. She excels in cartography, having mapped the Dungeon of the Dead during her adventuring years.

Her chronological development unfolds across multiple storylines. In the Water Town arc, she hired Goblin Slayer to eliminate sewer goblins, later admitting she allowed the infestation to escalate to attract his aid, hoping to end her nightmares. His promise to "slay the goblins in her dreams" reduced her night terrors, and she expressed romantic feelings for him. Following this, she collaborated with allies like the Hero to defeat the Hecatoncheir, advised the king on crises, and assisted Goblin Slayer’s party with deciphering prophetic tablets warning of existential threats.

During a mission to the capital in Volume 8, her trauma resurged when confronted by goblin wolf riders. She required consolation from Goblin Slayer during a flashback and later led warrior-priests into the Dungeon of the Dead to eliminate remaining goblins, relying on him for strength. In Volume 15, she aided in locating a missing centaur princess, showcasing her ongoing political and advisory role.

The spin-off *Dai Katana* explores her past as Female Bishop, detailing her journey with her party (Magic Knight, Black-Haired Lord, Sand Bandit, Female Warrior, and Samurai Captain) through the Dungeon of the Dead to defeat the Demon Lord. This story highlights her vulnerability, determination, and the camaraderie defining her early heroism, including her roles as party cartographer and combat medic.

Key relationships define her growth. Her bond with Goblin Slayer stems from shared trauma, evolving into trust and unrequited affection. She mentors Noble Fencer (later Female Merchant) after rescuing her from goblins, supporting her transition into advocacy for novice adventurer training. Her alligator familiar serves as both protector and emotional anchor.

Sword Maiden’s narrative arc illustrates a shift from trauma-driven paralysis to active advocacy. Though still haunted by her past, she leverages her position to fund preventative measures, support survivors, and contribute to fighting larger threats against the world, embodying a blend of fragility and resilience.
