Cancer Deathmask, born in Sicily, Italy, served as the 20th-century Gold Saint of Cancer. His birth name remains unknown; "Deathmask" originated from his practice of collecting victims' faces as temple trophies, trapping their souls to obstruct their afterlife journey. This habit reflected his sadistic, bloodthirsty nature and conviction that "force is justice," justifying any means—including innocent casualties—if they served his ends. He believed justice shifted with power dynamics, leading him to ally with the false Pope, Gemini Saga, despite knowing Saga murdered the true Pope and attempted to kill the infant Athena. Deathmask deemed Saga's strength sufficient validation for his rule, aligning with his philosophy that might inherently defines righteousness. During the Sanctuary arc, Deathmask twice confronted Dragon Shiryu. At Mount Lu, he attempted to assassinate retired Gold Saint Libra Dohko under Saga's orders but was thwarted by Shiryu and Aries Mu. Later, at the Cancer Temple, he battled Shiryu, deploying his Sekishiki Meikai Ha technique to banish the Bronze Saint's soul to Yomotsu Hirasaka. Psychokinetically attacking Shiryu's ally Shunrei from afar, Deathmask enraged Shiryu, prompting the Cancer Cloth to abandon him for irredeemable evil. Stripped of its protection, he was defeated and cast into the underworld abyss. In the Hades arc, Deathmask resurrected alongside Pisces Aphrodite and former Pope Aries Shion, ostensibly to serve Hades and assassinate Athena. This was a ruse orchestrated by Shion: the revived Saints feigned betrayal to infiltrate Hades' forces, aiming to obtain Athena's blood for her sacred armor and sacrifice themselves to destroy Elysium's Wailing Wall. Deathmask and Aphrodite confronted Aries Mu at Sanctuary, deliberately allowing Mu's Starlight Extinction to banish them to the underworld. There, Wyvern Rhadamanthys identified their deception and cast them into Yomotsu Hirasaka. Deathmask's spirit later joined the collective sacrifice of Gold Saints, combining their Cosmo to shatter the Wailing Wall and enable Athena's Saints to reach Elysium. The Cancer Cloth returned to protect him during this act, acknowledging his redemption. Deathmask wielded Gold Saint abilities like Seventh Sense mastery, teleportation, and long-range psychokinesis. His signature technique, Sekishiki Meikai Ha, severed opponents' souls from their bodies, banishing them to Yomotsu Hirasaka for eternal wandering or destruction. He could physically enter this dimension to dispatch souls, uniquely traversing the boundary between life and death. Beyond the main series, Deathmask appeared in spin-offs. In Gigantomachia, he trained orphan Mei as an aspirant for the Berenice Corona Bronze Cloth. In Soul of Gold, resurrected in Asgard, he initially embraced hedonism but rejoined the Gold Saints against Andreas Lise after witnessing villager Helena's death and comrade Aphrodite's sacrifice. This transformed his philosophy from ruthless pragmatism to valuing all life, earning his Cloth's reaffirmation. In the non-canon The Legend of Crimson Youth, he allied willingly with sun god Abel, maintaining his villainous alignment.
