Description
Cancer Deathmask serves as the 20th century Gold Saint of Cancer, notorious as the most cunning and cruel among the Zodiac Gold Saints. His temple walls bear the faces of his victims' souls, manifesting his bloodthirsty and sadistic nature. He champions the belief that force equals justice and the ends justify the means, aligning with whoever wields power—first the false Pope Gemini Saga, then Hades during the underworld conflict.

Thirteen years before the main events, amid the Pope's succession, Deathmask declared indifference to Sanctuary's political strife, pledging loyalty to the side serving his interests. He joined the pursuit of falsely accused Sagittarius Aiolos, confronting him at the Cancer temple to demand a bribe for passage. Athena's intervention briefly banished him to Yomotsu Hirasaka, where vengeful spirits assaulted him. Later, alongside Pisces Aphrodite and Capricorn Shura, he cornered Aiolos at a bridge, contributing to the Sagittarius Saint's apparent demise.

In the Sanctuary arc, Deathmask traveled to Rozan to reclaim the Libra Gold Cloth from Dohko. He overpowered Dragon Shiryu in their initial clash. When Shiryu confronted him later at the Cancer temple, Deathmask used Sekishiki Meikai Ha to hurl him toward hell's gate. After Shiryu's ally Shunrei prayed for his safety, Deathmask retaliated by telekinetically throwing her off a cliff. This act provoked Shiryu's rage and caused the Cancer Gold Cloth to abandon Deathmask for his evil deeds and lack of accountability. Defenseless, he was defeated by Shiryu and cast into hell's pit.

Within the Saintia Sho spin-off, Deathmask annihilated the Saint Academy and battled the Saintia Erda, justifying the attack by branding the academy's inhabitants as Sanctuary traitors. He acknowledged Erda's strength while effortlessly countering her assaults, revealing his true motive: the academy housed lingering souls of Eris's subordinates. After a brief skirmish and Callisto's intervention, he departed, devastating the surroundings.

Revived under Hades's influence in the Hades arc, Deathmask infiltrated the Sanctuary with Pisces Aphrodite and former Aries Pope Shion to assassinate Athena. Overwhelmed by Aries Mu and Pegasus Seiya, he pleaded for mercy before Mu banished him into Hades's Castle via Starlight Extinction, ultimately casting him into Yomotsu.

The Gigantomachia novel notes Deathmask trained Mei, an orphan aspiring to the Berenice Corona Bronze Cloth, in Sicily. Following Deathmask's death in the twelve temples battle, Mei retrieved his armor from Mount Etna.

Soul of Gold depicts Deathmask's transformation. Initially feigning carefree indifference, he avoided combat through gambling and drinking, masking profound melancholy. He formed a romantic bond with Asgardian villager Helena. Her death, alongside Aphrodite's, drove him to rejoin the fight against Andreas and the God Warriors. This experience shattered his former philosophy; he now prioritized protecting all life, regardless of value, earning back the Cancer Gold Cloth's recognition as a true Saint.
