Description
Bela is one of the three main protagonists of the anime, a member of a mysterious race known as the Youkai-Ningen, or humanoid monsters. She is the only female among this trio, which includes Bem and Belo, and her deepest wish is to become a human being, a goal that defines much of her existence and actions.

In the 2019 series, Bela adopts the human identity of Annabella, a student at the prestigious Saint Joseph High School located in the affluent Upper Town area. Attending school and maintaining friendships with her classmates is a conscious effort for her, a form of practice for the day she might finally achieve her humanity. Her personal history is touched upon by the fact that her human face once belonged to a deceased girl named Mary Russell, a discovery that adds a layer of tragedy to her quest for connection. Her origins are not extensively detailed, but she, like Bem and Belo, is implied to have existed for a very long time, pursuing justice in the hopes of one day being accepted.

Bela’s personality is notably more emotional and expressive than that of her stoic and silent companions, Bem and Belo. Because she is often with them, she does not talk a great deal, but she is by nature a more open and feeling individual. This expressiveness can manifest as a short temper, particularly when she feels her family is threatened, and she can develop a strong prejudice against humans when they attack her or the ones she cares about. Her desire to become human is a personal yearning, but the painful awareness that she is fundamentally different from the people around her often leaves her feeling hurt. Despite these challenges, she demonstrates a capacity for warmth, acting as a caring and sometimes parental figure towards the younger Belo, often teasing him or looking out for him like an older sister.

Within the story, Bela serves as the member of the trio most integrated into human society. Her life at school allows the narrative to explore themes of fitting in, friendship, and the painful reality of rejection. Her role is not just as a fighter, but also as the group's emotional center, often expressing the pain and frustration that Bem and Belo keep bottled up. She is deeply committed to protecting her found family of Bem and Belo, and her strong protective instincts drive her actions when they are in danger. In one significant storyline, she develops a crush on a boy from her school, an experience that confuses her and highlights her desire to experience the full range of human emotions and connections. Tragically, when the boy later sees her true monstrous form, he runs away in terror, a painful echo of the rejection the trio constantly face. Despite this, one of her classmates, a fan of monsters, accepts her, offering a small but significant glimmer of hope.

Bela's key relationships are central to her character. She shares an unbreakable bond with Bem and Belo, viewing them as her only true family. While she respects Bem's leadership and calm judgment, she often acts as his emotional foil, reacting more viscerally to the injustices they suffer. With Belo, their dynamic is one of familial teasing and genuine care, with her often understanding his feelings even when he tries to hide them. Her relationships with humans are more complex and often end in disappointment, though she continues to pursue them with a determined, if fragile, optimism.

Throughout the series, Bela undergoes significant development. She starts as a being who is deeply hurt by her own difference but is learning to navigate the human world. Her experiences, both positive and negative, gradually shape her understanding of humanity. Unlike Bem, who holds a more idealistic but distant hope, Bela’s journey is more immediate and personal, involving the messy realities of school life, friendship, and unrequited feelings. Her story is one of learning to cope with rejection while still holding onto the desire for acceptance, and she shows perhaps the most visible emotional growth among the trio.

Notable Abilities: As a Youkai-Ningen, Bela possesses several supernatural powers. She can transform from her human guise, Annabella, into her true, more powerful monster form at will. In combat, she is notably graceful, wielding a concealed whip hidden within her right arm with great skill. Her most distinctive elemental power is cryokinesis, the ability to generate and control freezing air, allowing her to encase her targets in ice. She also possesses enhanced physical capabilities such as superhuman agility and senses, and can teleport and create illusions. These abilities make her a formidable fighter, but she consistently uses them to protect humans and her family, hoping that one day such acts will lead to her becoming human.
