Description
Bela is one of three youkai-ningen, supernatural guardians protecting humans from malevolent entities while yearning to become human themselves. Her core motivation across adaptations is a deep admiration for humanity and a persistent drive to achieve human form.
In the original 1968 series, she is emotionally volatile and short-tempered, developing strong prejudices against humans when they threaten her family. She acts protectively toward the youngest member, Belo, and possesses the unique ability of resurrection.
The 2019 series reimagines her significantly. Lacking the backstory of being based on an alchemist's wife (now attributed to Vega), she adopts the human alias "Annabella" and enrolls at Saint Joseph High School in Upper Town. Her goal is to experience normal human life and prepare for her transformation. Unlike her earlier self, she doesn't harbor strong prejudices but is frequently pained by her inherent differences. Her naturally expressive nature is subdued by the quiet demeanors of her companions Bem and Belo.
Her core abilities remain consistent: she transforms into a monster form at will, possesses superhuman agility and senses, utilizes teleportation, creates illusions, and wields cryokinesis to freeze targets. She gracefully fights with a whip concealed within her right arm.
In the film "BEM: Become Human," set two years after the 2019 series, she lives separately from Bem and Belo, working as a waitress under a new human identity. She initially maintains a detached attitude toward the others' pursuits but ultimately rejoins them for a climactic battle when necessary. This adaptation features her human-form hair matching her monster form's coloration, a departure from earlier versions.
