Description
Kaname Shigeyoshi, nicknamed "Mokichi," is a first-year student at Kuzuryū High School and the center for its basketball team. Standing between 198 cm and 200 cm tall with notably long arms, he is the tallest player. Despite this height advantage, he suffers from chronically low stamina and overall physical weakness, often leading him to start games as a substitute. This physical limitation contrasts with his exceptional technical skills on the court.
Born into a wealthy Kawasaki, Kanagawa family that owns a construction company, he grew up in a spacious home featuring a garden basketball court. He has an older sister named Sayuri. Academically, he excels, frequently achieving perfect scores. Personality-wise, he is reserved and shy, speaking slowly and sparingly with minimal facial expression. He occasionally responds sarcastically to insults but generally maintains a detached demeanor.
Kaname attended Saijo Junior High, where he played basketball competitively. He quit during his second year due to intense pressure from expectations tied to his height, leaving him disillusioned. Seeking escape, he initially avoided basketball upon entering Kuzuryū High, joining the Chemistry Club instead. His return to the sport followed a school-wide friendly match where his signature hook shot caught the attention of Sora Kurumatani and teammates. Though he initially refused recruitment—even falsely citing health issues—he later apologized and joined after a one-on-one match with Sora.
His primary basketball skill is an advanced hook shot, honed since grade school as a compensatory "weapon" for his physical shortcomings. This technique is exceptionally difficult to block, frequently causing defenders to commit goaltending violations. Strengths include court awareness, adaptability, and hand-eye coordination, allowing him to seamlessly receive Chiaki Hanazono's passes. However, his lack of stamina remains a persistent challenge, requiring him to focus on efficient movements to conserve energy. Developmentally, he progresses from a substitute role toward becoming a more integrated starting center, though his physical frailty necessitates careful game management. His journey involves confronting past traumas related to expectations while contributing strategically through refined technique.
