Description
Mikan Shiratama is an 11-year-old human female introduced in the series' second season. She has scarlet red hair, styled in a high ponytail with loose curly strands at the sides and a cowlick on top during her idol activities, paired with round golden eyes. In her everyday life, her hair appears shorter, tied in a bun secured by a winged clip featuring a small orange, and she wears a school uniform with a winged tie. Her stature outside the idol context is notably shorter, aligning with peers like Laala Manaka and Aroma Kurosu.
Her personality is cheerful, optimistic, and happy-go-lucky, often described as angelic. She exhibits strong loyalty to her childhood friend and unit partner, Aroma Kurosu, frequently following Aroma's lead while also demonstrating agency in their relationship. Their bond began in kindergarten when Mikan helped the timid Aroma break out of her shell. A pivotal moment occurred when Mikan gifted Aroma a drawing depicting them as future idols. Though Aroma initially rejected the idea due to shyness, a school performance where Aroma dressed as a demon and Mikan as an angel solidified their dynamic, leading to the formation of their angel-demon themed unit, Aromageddon. Mikan refers to herself in the third person and uses verbal tics like "~nano" or "~jeru". She possesses a substantial appetite, favoring meat buns, a trait occasionally leveraged by others to motivate her. However, she prioritizes her bond with Aroma over food, rejecting an offer to join another team despite being tempted with treats.
As an idol, Mikan specializes in the Lovely type and represents the brand Silky Heart, which incorporates angelic motifs like wings into her coords. She and Aroma achieved Debut status during their first live performance, accomplishing this without using casual coords, making them among the first idols to do so alongside characters like Falulu and Fuwari Midorikaze. She is a core member of the unit Aromageddon, later renamed Gaarmageddon with the addition of the vocal doll Gaaruru. Mikan also participates in SoLa♡Ageddon Mi, Cosmic Omurice da Vinci, CelePara Ópera, and the PriPara Police alongside Laala and Dorothy West. Her singing repertoire includes unit and solo songs like "Reversible Ring," "Purely☆Smile," and "PaPiPuPe☆POLICE!".
Mikan holds unique distinctions: she never lost a Dream Idol Grand Prix (excluding the Summer Grand Prix she did not enter), won three consecutive Grand Prix, and never underwent Fairy Changing. She is the only second-season main character not to serve as the center of a Dream Team. Her talents extend beyond singing; she excels in most sports and holds a pilot's license despite her age. She uniquely understands and translates Aroma's archaic speech patterns for others and is left-handed.
She attends Paprika Private Academy as a sixth grader alongside Laala and Aroma. By episode 154, she becomes roommates with Aroma at Avocado Academy. Her name carries symbolic meaning: "Shiratama" combines "Shira" (白, meaning white, contrasting with Aroma's surname "Kurosu" containing "black") and "tama" (玉, meaning gem/ball or referencing rice dumplings). "Mikan" (みかん) means tangerine or mandarin orange, reflected in the orange accessory in her civilian hair clip. Early concept designs featured orange hair and green-orange attire with angel wings.
