Description
Spade, alias King, emerges as Joker's primary rival and one of Silver Heart's three students, alongside Joker and Queen. Discovered abandoned on a snowy road, he endured abuse from his adoptive brother within a wealthy family before seizing escape during a shipboard treasure theft, fleeing alongside Joker and Queen. This marked the start of their training under Silver Heart, though Spade and Joker clashed frequently even as children, constantly playing pranks on one another.

He presents a calm, confident, and prideful demeanor, typically maintaining composure. Yet, Spade exhibits a distinct playful antagonism toward Joker, engaging in mind games and heated exchanges. Notably, overexcitement can trigger a fever. Despite an outwardly distant nature, he holds deep loyalty and concern for friends like Joker, Queen, and his assistant Dark Eye. Their master-servant relationship extends into genuine friendship; Spade knows Dark Eye's secret identity as the idol Ai but keeps this knowledge private to spare her worry.

As a phantom thief, Spade relies on meticulous planning, extensive research, and information gathering, contrasting sharply with Joker's improvisational style. His precision is aided by specialized tools: a fake gun initially shooting flowers or paint (later replaced by a freezing gun) and burning trump cards. His signature exit is marked by the catchphrase "Adios!".

Spade's visual design evolved across media. Early manga depictions featured long dark blue or purple hair, a yellow mohawk, flamboyant attire including a white coat, and spade-shaped earrings. The anime standardized his look with blue hair, pinkish eyes, and dark blue pants adorned with black spade motifs; later manga iterations adjusted to align with this anime aesthetic.

Key backstory reveals include training at the Phantom Thief Academy with Joker and Queen, from which all three graduated. A pivotal childhood fishing trip with them led to discovering Roko, a genetically modified talking dog, and a joint adventure rescuing Queen from a monitor lizard experiment, solidifying their bond. Spade's parents abandoned him during a yacht trip involving an hourglass artifact, later revealed murdered by Professor Clover.

His development showcases vulnerability, like falling ill from overexcitement or stress, and demonstrates growth through moments of collaboration with Joker, such as rescuing civilians from a burning building.
