TV-Series
Description
Phoenix, also known as Akai Tsubasa, is a non-human entity who emerges as a primary rival in the later segments of the series. An alien who crash-landed on Earth over 10,000 years ago in an escape pod alongside a companion named Acrux, also called Hosshi, Phoenix is driven by the ultimate goal of finding a way back home.
In humanoid form, Phoenix possesses thick scarlet hair with gold-orange highlights, magenta eyes, and cross-shaped pupils. Typical attire includes a white and red hoodie, matching baggy trousers, and dark green and white sneakers. A true form features large orange wings, bird-like hands, taloned feet, a white and red bird mask, a coat with bell sleeves and yellow-green feathers on the shoulders, and a black skintight suit with gold markings beneath.
Having been sealed away for more than 3,000 years before breaking free, Phoenix displays a general lack of knowledge about the modern world, often appearing jaded, detached, and prone to frequent yawning. A recurring habit involves answering questions by listing three possible answers. A deep sense of homesickness is frequently expressed, with a constant yearning to return home.
Phoenix harbors a strong loathing for most humans, particularly those who seek to exploit his abilities for selfish desires, having outlived many over the centuries. However, a distinct fascination is held for the phantom thief Joker, whose cunning tricks and value for human life are found interesting and beyond ordinary human ability. Despite a generally detached demeanor, Phoenix shows a capacity for care, such as an inability to forgive those who harm Hosshi and a willingness to help those who have offered aid, like healing Chappa's mother after losing a bet.
Notable abilities include manipulation of flames, formation of fire ropes, and flight in true form. Mind control over animals and creatures is possible, with controlled hosts exhibiting pink, cross-pupiled eyes. A degree of combat skill allows for fighting on even terms with skilled opponents. Healing abilities are also present; Phoenix's blood can crystallize into an orb that cures illnesses and can revive the recently deceased, though the act is draining.
The background story recounts a journey through the galaxy over 10,000 years ago. An accident occurred when water from a souvenir package spilled onto the spaceship's control panel, causing a malfunction and forcing an emergency landing on Earth via escape pod. The pod crash-landed on an island, stranding both Phoenix and Acrux. Acrux's food, which scattered and became known as ancient treasures or jewels, is essential for creating Guidance Stones needed to locate the lost spaceship. Both were eventually sealed by a Pharaoh for 3,000 years.
After escaping the seal, Phoenix often clashed with Joker during the search for the Guidance Stones and the spaceship. Key events include obtaining the Crystal Skull Key in Australia, competing for treasures like the Star of Thor and the Genie's Lamp, and participating in the Phantom Thief Grand Prix on the island of the original crash. An inability to swim, due to water causing cellular breakdown, is a significant weakness that was exploited during these competitions.
Phoenix infiltrated a space center to retrieve the Red Comet for Hosshi and traveled to India to find another clue. The Urn of Life was briefly taken from Joker before being reclaimed. Assistance was provided in rescuing Hosshi from the Tiger Maidens. After being captured by Doctor Neo and nearly drowned in a water-filled tube, a rescue was performed by Joker. In return, and because Joker stated his apprentice Hachi was like family, Phoenix used his own blood to revive Hachi after Hachi took a bullet meant for Joker, an act that caused further weakness.
The journey concluded with Joker and Hachi helping Phoenix reach the recovered spaceship using a rocket. Phoenix finally returned home, acknowledging a loss to Joker but promising to return one day. The greatest treasure Joker sought was revealed to be the spaceship itself.
The relationship with Joker is particularly significant. Initially holding a low opinion of humans, Phoenix's interactions with Joker, who values human life and performs unexpected miracles, led to a shift in perspective. Joker is seen as a strong rival and their games are enjoyed, even in defeat. The dynamic is one of respectful rivalry and mutual saving, with Joker eventually enabling the return home.
