Description
Hosshii, whose real name is Acrux, is an extraterrestrial being who appears as a small, round, green, cat-like creature with a tan face and distinctive yellow star-shaped markings on his cheeks and the tip of his tail. His history is vast, having served as the navigator for a fellow alien named Phoenix, also known as Akai Tsubasa, for over ten thousand years. Their long partnership was interrupted when their spaceship malfunctioned and crash-landed on Earth, causing the two to be separated. Hosshii became sealed inside an Egyptian pharaoh's tomb, where he remained imprisoned for approximately three thousand years.
His release comes at the hands of the phantom thief Joker, who opens the chest containing him during a heist. Despite his former companion Phoenix appearing on the scene, Hosshii chooses to ignore him and instead attaches himself to Joker and his young apprentice, Hachi. This decision is born from an immediate bond with Hachi, to whom he remains deeply loyal. Even though Joker openly dislikes cats and frequently tries to keep his distance, Hosshii is similarly faithful to the phantom thief.
The core of Hosshii's personality is an obsessive and uncontrollable compulsion to consume valuable treasures. Once his attention is fixed on a jewel or artifact, he cannot be stopped, ignoring any objections from those around him. This insatiable appetite often puts him at odds with Joker, who is horrified to see his heist targets being eaten. There was a notable exception to this behavior when he consumed the treasure inside a mechanical Sabertooth Tiger, carefully leaving the exterior intact.
His motivations are simple and driven by his biology and his role. He is perpetually seeking to satisfy his hunger for treasure, which directly fuels his unique abilities. When Hosshii consumes a treasure, he does not digest it in a normal way; instead, he produces an egg that hatches into a tangible object. The nature of the object depends on the origin of the treasure consumed. If he eats an extraterrestrial relic that was originally part of Phoenix's scattered cargo, the resulting item is a key clue, such as a Guidance Stone, that helps locate their lost spaceship, referred to as the Ancient Treasure. When he consumes ordinary, Earth-made treasures, the items he produces are still highly useful for Joker's capers, ranging from rubber gloves and spring wires to aluminum foil and antiseptic solution.
This ability grants him a form of precognition, as the hatched objects often provide a solution to a future challenge that Joker will face. Furthermore, his refined palate serves as a reliable treasure detection system, as he instinctively refuses to consume counterfeit items, allowing him to distinguish genuine artifacts from fakes. He also has a highly malleable, rubber-like body that he can stretch to fit through tiny, cramped spaces. Among his few weaknesses, he shares with Phoenix a strong aversion to water, and eating a magnet will immediately put him to sleep. He also has a fondness for konpeito, a type of star-shaped candy that resembles the jewel-like food that was scattered when his ship crashed.
Hosshii's primary role in season three is as a crucial asset in Joker's quest. He is the key to finding the ancient treasure, and his ability to produce Guidance Stones forms the central map that leads Joker and his friends on their adventure. While he is a tool for progressing the plot, he also serves as a small, furry companion, much to the dismay of the cat-phobic Joker. He is often seen riding on Hachi's head, and the two share a warm, caring relationship, with Hachi taking responsibility for feeding him konpeito and defending him from Joker's fear-driven outbursts.
Over the course of his time with the group, Hosshii does not undergo a significant internal personality shift but rather fulfills a predetermined arc. His journey with Joker and Hachi concludes when the five Guidance Stones he produces successfully lead them to Phoenix's spaceship. Once the ship is reclaimed and the immediate danger has passed, Hosshii's purpose on Earth is fulfilled. He ultimately returns to Phoenix, resuming his original role as the navigator and ending his temporary partnership with Joker and Hachi.
