Description
Keita "Kēta" Amano, a central character, discovers a mysterious capsule toy vending machine in the forest and obtains a supernatural watch enabling him to see previously invisible yo-kai inhabiting everyday life. This discovery leads him to meet Whisper, a ghost butler who becomes his guide and companion. Alongside Whisper and his yo-kai friend Jibanyan, Keita explores his town encountering various benevolent and antagonistic yo-kai.
In one significant incident, the yo-kai Kin and Gin steal Keita's yo-kai watch under the direction of their master, Dame Dedtime, aiming to sever human-yo-kai friendships. During this event, the yo-kai Hovernyan transports Keita, Whisper, and Jibanyan 60 years into the past. There, Keita meets his grandfather, Nathaniel, as a child—the original inventor of the yo-kai watch. Together, they confront Dame Dedtime and her minions to protect the human-yo-kai bond.
A pivotal development occurs when Keita falls into a manhole on his way to school, resulting in his transformation into the yo-kai Fuu 2. This experience allows him to understand yo-kai existence firsthand. As Fuu 2, he befriends a struggling classmate aspiring to be a comic artist and helps him navigate academic challenges. Keita later reunites with his human form but retains the yo-kai medal of Fuu 2.
During a conflict in the yo-kai world, Keita joins allies including Hailey Anne Thomas to confront Zazel, the head of the yo-kai council who imprisoned Lord Enma and declared human-yo-kai friendships forbidden. Keita uses the Fuu 2 yo-kai medal—revealed to be Lord Enma’s own medal—to help defeat Zazel and restore balance between humans and yo-kai.
In adulthood, Keita loses his ability to see yo-kai, and his yo-kai watch is buried in space-time. Thirty years later, a new threat emerges: the yo-kai virus Onimaro, which infects human malevolence. Though Keita is no longer the active wielder, his legacy influences subsequent generations chosen to reactivate the yo-kai watch and restore human-yo-kai bonds.
