Description
Matoi Sumeragi is a 14-year-old second-year junior high school student who serves as the protagonist of the series. At the start of the story, she has recently moved to Kamaya City to live with her father, Shingo, a police detective, following the mysterious disappearance of her mother. To help support her family and stay connected to her friend, she works a part-time job as a shrine maiden at Tenman Shrine, which is run by the family of her best friend, Yuma Kusanagi. Matoi is a gentle and shy young woman who desires nothing more than to lead a quiet, ordinary life away from any kind of attention. She is content with her routine of school and her shrine work, and she dreams of one day becoming a good wife for a future husband. Despite her modest and friendly demeanor, she also possesses a slightly pessimistic streak and can be hard on herself when she feels she falls short of her own standards.

Matoi’s primary motivation is to protect the peaceful, normal life she holds dear, as well as the people she cares about. This desire is challenged when a Night, an evil extra-dimensional entity, attacks Tenman Shrine. During an attempt by Yuma to perform a ritual of Divine Possession, Matoi unexpectedly becomes the vessel for a god instead. Through this event, she gains the power to banish evil spirits, taking on the role of a Sacred Slayer. Her motivation shifts from simply wanting a normal life to actively fighting to preserve that life against supernatural threats. As the series progresses, she learns to accept her new responsibilities while still striving to maintain her everyday routine.

Her role in the story is that of the central heroine who must master her newfound abilities to combat the Nights. She is joined by Claris Tonitolus, an experienced exorcist from the Vatican, and Haruka Luciela, an agent of the secretive organization IATO, who help guide her in her battles. Matoi’s key relationships include her deep and supportive friendship with Yuma Kusanagi, who is both a close confidante and a fellow shrine maiden candidate. Her relationship with her father, Shingo, is caring but sometimes strained due to his protective nature and the secrets surrounding her mother’s disappearance. Over the course of the series, Matoi matures from a reluctant and uncertain girl into a more confident and determined young woman, learning to balance her ordinary life with her extraordinary duty.

Matoi’s primary ability is the power of Divine Union, which allows her to channel a god and transform into a Sacred Slayer. In this transformed state, her brown hair turns pink, her eyes become red, and she gains white wings. She wields an Exorcism Rod as her main weapon and can access a power known as Myriad, which draws strength from the local minor gods in the area. This power manifests as a sword and a physical halo, granting her enhanced combat capabilities to banish the Nights. Her abilities are closely tied to her emotional state and her willingness to protect others, making her growth as a person directly linked to her effectiveness as a slayer.
