Description
Yuma Kusanagi is a junior shrine maiden candidate at Tenman Shrine, part of the Kusanagi family entrusted with its care. She exhibits a playful, stubborn, blunt, and highly energetic personality, frequently speaking in the third person and affectionately calling herself "Yumachin". Her family heritage connects her to exorcism traditions, but her grandfather, Seigen Kusanagi, sealed her powers during childhood. He feared higher-dimensional beings linked to her abilities would permanently take her away after those powers manifested uncontrollably at a young age.
Yuma possesses two familiars: a female kitsune named Kuu and a male tanuki named Kai. These familiars enable her transformations into Kitsune and Tanuki forms. Initially inaccessible due to the seal, she breaks it with Clarus Tonitrus's help around episode 6, unlocking the ability to perform "Divine Union" transformations. Fusing with higher-dimensional beings grants her dimensional manipulation, spatial and temporal control, teleportation, flight, and barrier creation. Her defensive Tanuki form demonstrates significant resilience, notably shattering an ice barrier imprisoning Matoi. In combat, her power scales variably, potentially reaching infinite levels when her determination intensifies, though exceeding dimensional limitations risks her existential erasure.
Her development shifts her from an enthusiastic magical girl otaku to an active participant in supernatural conflicts. Early on, she envies a divine entity bonding with Matoi instead of her during a shrine attack, fueling her desire to contribute. This evolves into fierce protectiveness, especially toward Matoi. Key moments include opposing plans to send Matoi to a higher dimension to prevent the world's end, physically confronting her family patriarch over this, and declaring she will defend Matoi from any harm. She later accompanies Matoi to the higher dimension, holding her hand before their unification. Her energetic nature sometimes manifests as attention-seeking, like attempting to rebrand heroic activities online and temporarily hijacking the series' title sequence to proclaim herself "Yuma the Sacred Slayer".
Yuma's core relationship is her close friendship with Matoi Sumeragi. As Matoi's best friend, she uses the nickname "Toi-chan" and shows unwavering loyalty, including shielding her from romantic rivals. This devotion drives major actions: rejecting Matoi's sacrificial destiny, attempting to physically prevent her departure until restrained, and prioritizing Matoi's safety over global solutions. She shares unguarded moments with Matoi, sleeping on her lap and expressing admiration for her appearance. With Clarus Tonitrus, she establishes a friendly rapport, using the nickname "Ku-chan" despite naming her fox familiar similarly. Within her family, she assists at the shrine under her parents, Takuto and Chika Kusanagi, while her grandfather Seigen monitors her potential as his successor.
