His outlook changed when he met Meowzie, a female Meowth owned by a wealthy woman. Enamored by her luxurious life, he vowed to improve his standing. This ambition led him to secretly observe etiquette classes at a mansion, where he painstakingly taught himself to walk upright and speak human language—traits rare for his species. The first word he understood was "rocket." Despite his efforts, Meowzie rejected him as a "freak," cementing his resolve to gain wealth and acceptance. This rejection directly motivated him to join Team Rocket, seeking the riches he believed would win her affection.

As a Team Rocket member, Mauzi remains fiercely loyal to Jessie and James. Encounters with his former gang and Meowzie, now abandoned and under Persian's care, bring his past to the surface. He attempts to rescue her, but she refuses, citing gratitude toward Persian and reiterating her view of him as unnatural. While normally quadrupedal, his self-taught bipedal locomotion and speech mark him as unique among his kind.
