Nyarth, also known as Meowth, is a Normal-type Pokémon and a core member of Team Rocket alongside Jessie and James. Abandoned as a kitten, he survived on the streets of Tinseltown, joining a gang of street Meowth led by a Persian. There, he developed an unrequited affection for Meowzie. To impress her, he painfully taught himself to walk upright and speak human language, sacrificing his ability to learn typical Meowth moves like Pay Day. Rejected by Meowzie as a "freak," he joined Team Rocket after learning the word "rocket" from a picture book. Within Team Rocket, Nyarth acts as the primary strategist and translator, interpreting Pokémon speech for humans and vice versa. He constructs the trio's mechanical devices and vehicles, often designing them in his own likeness. Though he views himself as the group's leader, Jessie and James frequently undermine his authority. Nyarth harbors an ambition to become Giovanni's "top cat," a position held by a Persian, fueling his jealousy and disdain for the species. Despite constant failures to capture rare Pokémon like Ash's Pikachu, his loyalty to Jessie and James remains unwavering. Nyarth's personality blends cunning with vulnerability. He is adept at deception, exemplified by a long con where he feigned expulsion from Team Rocket to infiltrate Ash's group and steal Pokémon from a secured vault. Despite his villainous role, he exhibits occasional compassion, comforting abandoned Pokémon or showing tenderness toward Misty's Togepi. He frequently reflects on his existence, expressing loneliness and philosophical musings during solitary moments under the moon. In Pokémon 4Ever, Nyarth appears as part of the Team Rocket trio pursuing Celebi. Their efforts are secondary to the primary antagonist, the Iron Masked Marauder. Nyarth's involvement includes scheming to capture Celebi or Pikachu, with no unique character development occurring. Across spin-offs, Nyarth explores non-villainous pursuits. In one instance, he temporarily abandons Team Rocket missions to reside in Big Town, attempting to build a golden statue but facing setbacks after losing a picnic basket in mishaps. This highlights his adaptability outside criminal endeavors, though he consistently returns to Jessie and James. His combat abilities are limited due to his focus on human traits, resulting in only six recorded battle victories, though he demonstrates unexpected prowess when emotionally provoked. His complex relationship with Pikachu oscillates between rivalry and mutual respect, with Nyarth acknowledging they could have been friends under different circumstances.
