Description
Haruka Ogasawara is a third-year student at Kitauji High School and serves as the president of the school's concert band. She also holds the position of leader for the saxophone section, playing the baritone saxophone, a low-pitched woodwind instrument. She is a student two years senior to the series' protagonist, Kumiko Oumae. Appearing as a girl of average height and build, she has shoulder-length dark-brown hair that she typically wears in two twin-tails and large golden-brown eyes. She is usually seen in the standard Kitauji High School uniform for third-year students.

Haruka's personality is defined by her friendly, mature, and responsible nature, though she is also polite and can be slightly timid. She is a diligent and committed leader, but she constantly struggles with a lack of self-confidence. This insecurity largely stems from living in the shadow of the highly popular and talented vice president, Asuka Tanaka. Haruka often questions her own merits and worthiness as band president, feeling inferior to Asuka's natural charisma and leadership abilities. She also battles guilt and insecurity over her perceived failure to prevent a major schism within the band that occurred during her second year, a conflict that led to many members, including Nozomi Kasaki, quitting the ensemble.

Her journey as a leader begins reluctantly. During the turbulent events of the previous year, when conflicts between the first and third years created a toxic atmosphere, Haruka worked hard alongside Kaori Nakaseko and Aoi Saitou to mediate the situation. After that incident, when it came time to choose a new band president, the other second-year students hoped Asuka would take the role. However, Asuka refused, and the kind-hearted Haruka found herself unable to refuse, accepting the position out of a sense of obligation. Early in her tenure under the new and demanding advisor Noboru Taki, Haruka is shown to be indecisive and struggles to correct the band's lax discipline, often being swayed by her classmates. Her stress and guilt culminate in a mental breakdown following the sudden withdrawal from the band of her best friend, Aoi, which leads her to take a day off from school. She is able to regain her confidence thanks to the encouragement of Kaori, who visits her and reaffirms her courage in accepting the presidency.

Following this crisis, Haruka demonstrates significant growth, transforming into a more decisive and responsible manager who does not avoid difficult situations. This development is evident in her ability to maintain neutrality and provide context during the return of Nozomi Kasaki in her third year, as well as in a moment of crisis when Asuka is forced to stop attending practice due to parental opposition. With the band's spirit wavering, Haruka steps forward to deliver a passionate speech, arguing that the members have propped Asuka up as an idol and that it is now their turn to support her as equals. This act galvanizes the group and shows her growth into a more assured and effective leader. In her final year, she finally achieves the goal of performing in the main ensemble at the national competition.

Haruka's role within the story is primarily as a supportive figure and a representation of responsible, yet insecure, leadership. She is a key member of the third-year student leadership, which includes Asuka Tanaka as vice president and Kaori Nakaseko as the band's accountant. Her key relationships are central to her character. Her friendship with Kaori Nakaseko, the trumpet section leader, is a deep and supportive one; Kaori is a trusted confidante who helps Haruka through her struggles and acknowledges the burden she carries. Her relationship with Asuka is more complex. While she admires Asuka's abilities, she also feels a persistent inferiority complex towards her. However, this dynamic evolves into a mutual respect as Haruka learns to stand on her own and support Asuka in return. After graduation, Haruka reconciles with Aoi Saitou when they meet in college, and the two participate in a wind instrument club together, restoring their friendship.

Notable abilities beyond her leadership include her proficiency on the baritone saxophone. Noboru Taki, the band's advisor, ranks her as one of the top performers among her year, alongside Asuka and Kaori. This skill is showcased when she performs a solo during a band concert at the train station, demonstrating her musical talent and confidence. Her personal instrument is a Yamaha YBS-62II baritone saxophone. Outside of music, her hobbies include listening to rock music and going to live concerts, and she possesses a special skill for playing the kendama, a traditional Japanese toy. According to unofficial notes, she has a poor sense of direction and a reputation as a rain girl for the frequency of rain on days she has events.
