Description
Sapphire Kawashima, preferring the name Midori, comes from an affluent background and attended the elite all-girls Seijou Junior High. There, she began her musical journey on the contrabass. Continuing her passion at Kitauji High School's concert band, she initially aimed for the flute before committing to the double bass. She affectionately calls her instrument "George," treasuring it despite the frequent finger injuries sustained during practice.

Petite with below-average height and weight, Midori stands as one of the band's shortest members. Her wavy, chin-length blond hair is often adorned with a turquoise bow featuring light-green polka dots, and a distinctive strand perpetually sticks up at the back. She possesses greenish-lime eyes and thick eyebrows, typically dressed in the standard first-year female Kitauji uniform.

Naturally cheerful and selfless, Midori habitually puts friends before herself, though she battles excessive worry and fragile self-confidence. Embarrassment over her given name "Sapphire" prompts her preference for "Midori" (green). Despite her timidity, she exhibits deep kindness, care, and supportiveness. Her interests include baking sweets, collecting stuffed animals, and hunting for musical instrument charms at prize dispensers, especially seeking Tuba-kun. She dislikes computers due to operational unfamiliarity. Her pets include an iguana named Macaroon and a giant Japanese salamander plush named Kaiser.

At Kitauji, she forges close bonds with Kumiko Oumae and Hazuki Katou, her first friends there. These relationships involve trusting discussions about personal crushes and offering mutual comfort. Midori also mentors Motomu Tsukinaga upon his bass section entry, guiding him toward kindness and diligent practice. She has a younger sister named Kohaku Kawashima.

Across her band tenure, Midori evolves from a timid newcomer into a more assured member and leader. By her third year, she leads the bass section, guiding newcomers like Motomu. Her musical dedication remains unwavering; she participates in Colour Guard during marching band due to the double bass's impractical size. Academically, she plans to attend design school after graduation, signaling clear aspirations beyond music.
