Description
Shūichi Tsukamoto is a Kitauji High School student and childhood friend of Kumiko Oumae, having attended the same junior high school. He has a tall, slim build, short light brown-greenish hair, and lime-green eyes, typically wearing the standard male uniform. Generally calm and easygoing, he actively observes minor conflicts within the concert band, privately sharing relevant gossip only with Kumiko without spreading it further. He demonstrates a supportive nature, helping others and maintaining politeness.

He played French horn in junior high but switched to trombone upon entering high school after winning a rock-paper-scissors game, aligning with his appreciation for jazz trombone. His relationship with Kumiko became strained in their third year of junior high after he made a disparaging remark about her appearance, telling her never to speak to him again. However, they reestablished a comfortable, informal friendship in high school, often conversing without polite speech privately. Shūichi developed romantic feelings for Kumiko but remained shy discussing such topics initially.

Within the concert band, he attentively observes internal dynamics, noting conflicts like those between upperclassmen that contributed to second-year dropouts. While not always central to major plotlines, he serves as Kumiko's confidant, offering reassurance before performances. In Kumiko's third year, he served as concert band vice president alongside band major Reina Kōsaka. Their working relationship faced tension due to differing opinions and Reina's criticism of his leadership, including disapproval of his attempts to accompany Kumiko home.

Romantic developments with Kumiko progressed significantly later. During a summer festival before their third year, he confessed his feelings, leading to a relationship. He gifted her a white flower-like hair clip, paralleling an item from Taki's past. Their relationship encountered challenges under band commitments and future uncertainties; Kumiko initiated a temporary breakup during a training camp, returning the hair clip intending to resume things after club activities. A post-credits scene years later hinted at reconciliation, showing Kumiko with the sunflower hairpin he gave her.

Outside his connection to Kumiko, he interacted with other band members. Hazuki Katō confessed feelings during the Agata Festival, but he rejected her, citing his affection for Kumiko. This created temporary distance, though he continued regarding Hazuki as a friend. He formed a closer bond with second-year trombonist Michiru Hakase during sectional practices, leading to casual outings that Kumiko misinterpreted as romantic interest; Kanade Hisaishi later clarified the situation.

Additional details include his dislike of tomatoes (though tolerating ketchup), hobbies of reading manga and collecting jazz CDs, and a noted skill in gaming. His given name Shūichi combines "excellent, outstanding" (秀) and "one" (一), while his surname Tsukamoto means "mound" (塚) and "base" (本).
