Description
Shigeru Fujiwara is a middle-aged man with short black-gray hair, rectangular glasses, and faint stubble, frequently dressed in long-sleeved shirts and absorbed in a newspaper. Alongside his wife, Touko, he becomes a distant relative and foster parent to Takashi Natsume after meeting him at a family funeral. The couple cultivates a stable, respectful home, balancing privacy with familial inclusion. Shigeru’s calm presence and subtle kindness ease Takashi’s guarded nature, exemplified when he reassures the youth after supernatural incidents cause household disruptions without demanding explanations.

Born into a multigenerational home as an only child, Shigeru’s childhood intertwined with the supernatural after Reiko Natsume exorcised a malevolent ayakashi, Karime, haunting his family. Though the encounter left him with fragmented memories of Reiko and a scolding for resulting property damage, it marked his sole brush with the spirit world before adulthood. Following his parents’ and grandparents’ eventual passing, he studied cooking in college, married Touko, and settled into his ancestral Fujiwara residence. Unable to conceive biological children, the couple later opens their home to Takashi, finding him isolated and adrift during a funeral.

Reserved yet gently approachable, Shigeru expresses care through shared activities like pottery, inviting Takashi to join workshops or assist in acquiring tools. His parenting centers on fostering security, calmly dismissing apologies for mishaps to emphasize their shared ownership of the home. This aligns with his name’s meaning, 滋 ("nourishing"), symbolizing his role as an emotional anchor. The Fujiwara family name, 藤原 ("wisteria meadow"), echoes themes of enduring support and harmony, reflecting the couple’s united dynamic.

Though an unspecified episode hints at Shigeru and Touko’s pre-Takashi life, their bond is defined by mutual devotion and quiet teamwork. His forgotten childhood tie to Reiko subtly connects him to the series’ exploration of legacy and forgotten bonds, though he remains oblivious to Takashi’s spiritual struggles or Reiko’s Book of Friends. Across all portrayals, Shigeru embodies steadfast reliability and compassionate stability, anchoring Takashi’s tumultuous world with unspoken understanding.
