Description
Takashi Natsume has dusty-blonde or silver hair and golden-brown or green slit-pupiled eyes, standing about 167 cm tall. His delicate, feminine features often draw comparisons to his late grandmother, Reiko Natsume, fueling self-consciousness and a conscious effort to use masculine language.

Orphaned young after his mother died shortly after his birth and his father passed later, he retains only fragmented, painful memories of his parents. This led to prolonged instability as distant relatives passed him around, mistaking his visible reactions to invisible spirits (yokai) for attention-seeking lies or mental instability. Experiences of neglect, bullying, and potential abuse marked this period, including expulsion from an orphanage and traumatic incidents like being driven away by a foster sibling (Miyoko Aoi) and blamed for property damage caused by pursuing yokai. These fostered deep-seated loneliness, fear of rejection, and a belief in his unworthiness of love, culminating in coping mechanisms like emotional detachment and masking distress with false smiles.

He inherited Reiko Natsume’s extraordinarily strong spiritual powers, enabling him to perceive, communicate with, and physically interact with yokai without artifacts. This includes releasing names from the "Book of Friends" – a ledger containing contracts of spirits Reiko defeated – by visualizing the spirit, retrieving its name page, and exhaling the name back, a process draining his energy. His spiritual strength allows him to harm even powerful yokai with punches or kicks, though this is ineffective against humans.

After moving in with the kind Fujiwara couple (Touko and Shigeru), he found his first stable, loving home. Determined not to burden them or disrupt their normalcy, he conceals his ability and the dangerous encounters stemming from the Book of Friends. His mission is to return all names within the book to their rightful spirit owners, rejecting its power for control. This resolve stems from empathy and a desire to rectify his grandmother’s actions, viewing the spirits as individuals deserving autonomy.

Initially reserved and distrustful towards humans and yokai due to past trauma, his relationships evolve significantly. He forms a pivotal bond with Madara (Nyanko-sensei), a powerful spirit bound as his bodyguard in exchange for inheriting the book upon his death. Despite their transactional start and frequent bickering, mutual respect and genuine affection develop, with Madara becoming his closest confidant and guide. Slowly, he builds trusting friendships with humans: classmates Nishimura and Kitamoto; Tanuma Kaname, who possesses limited spiritual perception; and Taki Tooru, who studies spirit-related magic. He remains cautious about involving them to protect them from danger, particularly Tanuma. His interactions with exorcists like Natori Shuuichi are wary, while he actively opposes the methods of Seiji Matoba and his clan.

His character development involves gradually overcoming isolation and fear. Through returning names and aiding spirits, he gains insights into Reiko’s lonely life, fostering a complex connection with her legacy. Confrontations challenge his self-sacrificing nature and reluctance to rely on others. Instances where he temporarily loses his ability or faces figures from his past force him to acknowledge the value of his connections and his own growth. While still struggling with anxiety, nightmares, and residual trauma, he consciously chooses kindness, recognizing shared loneliness between humans and spirits and valuing all meaningful encounters, however fleeting. Physically, he exhibits low stamina, heat sensitivity, and susceptibility to illness, often collapsing after strenuous spiritual exertion or emotional distress.

He treasures the Book of Friends as Reiko’s sole memento but sees returning the names as essential to his purpose. His journey continues as he navigates life between the human and spirit worlds, seeking understanding and reconciliation for both himself and the legacies he carries forward.
