Description
Satoru Nishimura is a first-year high school student and classmate of Takashi Natsume in Class 2. He holds the distinction of being Natsume's first friend after Natsume transferred to the town, completely unaware of Natsume's ability to see youkai. Nishimura shares an inseparable bond with his best friend Atsushi Kitamoto, a friendship established long before they met Natsume.
Physically, Nishimura sports short brown hair and brown eyes, standing slightly shorter than Natsume, Kitamoto, and Kaname Tanuma. He is most often seen in his school uniform: a white collared shirt and grey pants.
Nishimura possesses a humorous and easy-going personality, occasionally displaying perverted tendencies in his jokes. Alongside Kitamoto, he persistently pursued friendship with the initially reserved Natsume. Their open-minded acceptance of Natsume's occasional odd behavior eventually forged a close bond. Nishimura proves perceptive about Natsume's emotional state, recognizing genuine versus forced smiles and noting his discomfort during family discussions.
Key interactions include Nishimura discovering Natsume unconscious after a youkai attack (which Natsume blamed on anemia) and insisting on taking him home to rest. This act inadvertently exposed Natsume to a youkai that later possessed Nishimura. Under possession, Nishimura exhibited uncharacteristic aggression, snapping at Natsume over paper crane folding before fleeing into the forest; he sensed a heavy, dark presence on his shoulders during this time. Natsume located him and expelled the spirit. During the exorcism, Nishimura briefly overheard Natsume confiding to Madara that Nishimura was his first school friend. This incident deepened their connection, leading them to fold paper cranes together at Nishimura's house later.
Nishimura, alongside Kitamoto, taught Natsume to ride a bicycle upon discovering Natsume lacked the skill. The trio frequently plans leisure activities, reflecting their growing camaraderie. Nishimura sometimes expresses frustration that Natsume leans more on Tanuma for support, especially concerning health issues like "anemia" (Natsume's cover for youkai incidents). Demonstrating loyalty and concern, Nishimura actively researches anemia to assist and provides iron-rich food like curry bread.
His family life includes a brother who helps with origami and a conflictual relationship with his mother, often arguing over trivial matters like lunch contents. Nishimura harbors a persistent crush on classmate Tooru Taki, frequently enlisting Natsume's help to invite her to group outings. Taki seems unaware of his feelings, and Nishimura sometimes mistakenly suspects Taki and Natsume are romantically involved.
In a minor storyline, Nishimura's awareness of local trends helped identify a ribbon from a popular confectionery shop near Kitamoto's residence. This knowledge proved useful when the ribbon was found on Madara, leading to the discovery that Kitamoto's sister had used it to secure an ice pack after accidentally hitting Madara with a persimmon.
Throughout all interactions, Nishimura remains oblivious to the supernatural elements surrounding Natsume, consistently attributing unusual events to mundane causes. His development centers on evolving from a persistent classmate to a trusted friend who provides a grounded, human connection amidst Natsume's isolated experiences with youkai.
