Description
Satoru Nishimura is a first-year high school student and recurring classmate in Class 2, sharing the school with Takashi Natsume. He holds the distinction of being the first friend Natsume made upon transferring to town, though he remains unaware of Natsume's ability to perceive youkai. Nishimura shares a close friendship with Atsushi Kitamoto, and together they actively reached out to Natsume despite his initial reserve.
He has short brown hair and brown eyes, appearing slightly shorter than Natsume, Kitamoto, and Kaname Tanuma. He is frequently seen in his school uniform: a white collared shirt and grey pants.
Nishimura's personality is humorous and easygoing, with a noted tendency toward slightly perverted humor. He and Kitamoto consistently demonstrate open-mindedness and acceptance toward Natsume, even when observing his unusual behaviors. Their persistence gradually fosters a meaningful friendship. Key interactions define his role: he was the first to speak to Natsume in class; he and Kitamoto taught Natsume to ride a bicycle upon discovering he lacked the skill; and he invited Natsume to his home after finding him seemingly unconscious following a youkai attack, attributing it to anemia.
He experiences significant plot involvement when possessed by a youkai, manifesting as uncharacteristic irritability, such as snapping at Natsume over folding paper cranes. The possession escalates, leading him to flee into a forest feeling a heavy, dark presence on his shoulders. Natsume rescues him, using Madara's power to expel the youkai. Semi-conscious, Nishimura overhears Natsume confide that he values him as his first classroom friend. Later, he assists Natsume in folding paper cranes for Touko Fujiwara’s acquaintance in the hospital, demonstrating patience and support.
His relationships include a distant but observant older brother, who briefly demonstrates kindness by completing a paper crane for them but previously expressed discomfort with Natsume. Nishimura harbors a persistent crush on Tooru Taki, frequently recruiting Natsume and Kitamoto to visit her class and attempting to involve her in group activities. His feelings are unreciprocated and likely unnoticed by Taki.
Nishimura's development centers on his consistent, grounding presence in Natsume’s life, providing normalcy and unwavering friendship that contrasts with Natsume’s supernatural struggles. His minor roles in later stories, such as identifying a specialty shop ribbon during an investigation involving Nyanko-sensei, reinforce his local knowledge and willingness to assist.
