Description
Tōru Taki attends the same school as Takashi Natsume. She has short dusty blonde hair, light brown eyes, and stands 160 cm tall. Her birthday falls on May 15, and she has blood type O. Taki belongs to an ancient, affluent family descended from former onmyoji practitioners. Her parents' frequent overseas work led to minimal presence during her childhood, leaving her primarily raised by her grandfather, Shin'ichiro Taki. Their close bond centered on a mutual passion for youkai folklore. Her older brother, Isamu Taki, six years her senior, distanced himself from the family over skepticism about the supernatural. After her grandfather’s death when she was approximately 10, Taki chose to live alone in the family home, rejecting her parents' offer to relocate abroad.

Initially presenting as introverted and mysterious at school, Taki avoided speaking due to a curse inflicted by a youkai. This followed her repeated use of a mystical circle inherited from her grandfather—a device enabling humans with minimal spiritual energy to see youkai within its radius. The curse required the youkai to consume the last thirteen names she spoke yearly, trapping her in a lethal gamble. Her silence protected others from being targeted. After Natsume and Nyanko-sensei sealed the youkai, Taki reverted to her innate personality: friendly, optimistic, and extroverted. She exhibits bluntness and occasional tactlessness, coupled with a distinctive perception of cuteness that compels her to frequently hug Nyanko-sensei’s cat form despite his resistance.

Though unable to see youkai unaided due to low spiritual energy, Taki commands extensive knowledge of youkai lore and spells from her grandfather’s research. Her unique skill involves flawlessly drawing complex youkai-enabling circles without reference—a feat others struggle to replicate. Later, she studies her grandfather’s onmyoji texts, gradually mastering ancient spells and youkai literature while maintaining caution from her curse experience.

Taki cultivates key relationships. She deems Natsume a best friend after he breaks her curse, consistently supporting him. With Kaname Tanuma, she ranks among the few humans aware of Natsume’s youkai-sight. Both aid him during crises, such as his transformation into a child by a youkai, though Natsume often restricts their involvement for safety. Her dynamic with Isamu remains distant initially, defined by his supernatural denial and avoidance of the family home. When Isamu returns due to unexplained physical discomfort and a quest to identify an old key, Taki recruits Natsume’s help to decipher his behavior, revealing her concern for their strained relationship.

Taki evolves from isolation under the curse to actively assisting in youkai matters and engaging friends. Her curiosity about her grandfather’s work deepens, prompting independent onmyoji research in later seasons. Efforts to bridge gaps with Isamu showcase her persistence, as when coordinating with Natsume to probe his distress—uncovering a youkai’s influence on his symptoms. This underscores her resourcefulness and growing resolve to confront supernatural challenges despite residual curse-related fears.
