Description
Kaname Tanuma is a teenage boy possessing limited spiritual perception, sensing yōkai only as vague shadows or presences which frequently cause him physical discomfort like headaches or sickness. This sensitivity originates from a small amount of spiritual energy. Exposure to Natsume Takashi's stronger abilities gradually stabilizes his condition, lessening his susceptibility to illness. He stands 171 cm tall with a slender build, messy black hair framing his face, and dark eyes, usually seen in his school uniform.

His reserved and quiet demeanor conceals deep concern for others, particularly Natsume. He often worries about Natsume's safety yet respects his autonomy, though he grapples with feelings of inadequacy stemming from his inability to fully perceive yōkai. This insecurity fuels a strong protective instinct, leading to frustration when figures like Madara or Natori label him "useless" or "powerless".

Tanuma's background involves frequent childhood relocations due to his father's work as a Buddhist priest, living in various temples. Raised solely by his father, his mother's absence remains unexplained. His aunt, Satomi Tanuma, cared for him during illnesses when his father was occupied. His spiritual sensitivity contributed to a frail constitution and social isolation in his early years. After transferring schools, he befriends Natsume upon discovering their shared secret, becoming one of the few humans aware of Natsume's abilities and the Book of Friends.

Their friendship evolves significantly: Tanuma becomes Natsume's primary human confidant, offering emotional grounding and practical support. He assists in covering yōkai-related incidents and persistently encourages Natsume to share burdens, notably after rescuing him from yōkai captivity during a banquet incident. Their dynamic is reciprocal; Natsume's presence stabilizes Tanuma's spiritual sensitivity, while Tanuma's empathy helps Natsume navigate trust and belonging.

Beyond Natsume, Tanuma maintains friendships with classmates Tooru Taki, Atsushi Kitamoto, and Satoru Nishimura. His relationship with exorcist Shuuichi Natori begins strained due to Natori's dismissive remarks about his abilities, though mutual concern for Natsume forges an uneasy alliance. Tanuma demonstrates perceptiveness, recognizing when Natsume conceals distress or avoids topics. His curiosity emerges regarding unfamiliar names like Reiko, with anime depictions showing him less persistent than manga portrayals.

Across the series, his resolve to protect Natsume intensifies, culminating in direct interventions during crises. His character development includes expressing interest in exorcism and revealing skills like piano playing. Symbolically, his name "Kaname" meaning "keystone" reflects his role as a stabilizing force in Natsume's life.
