Description
Kaname Tanuma is a close friend and classmate of Takashi Natsume, and one of the few humans who knows about Natsume’s ability to see youkai. He serves as a recurring character, with a significant role in the story The Stone Waker and the Strange Visitor, where he becomes the focus of a supernatural incident.

In terms of background, Tanuma is the only child of a Buddhist priest who lives and works at a temple in Yatsuhara. His mother is absent, and he was raised solely by his father, with his aunt Satomi sometimes caring for him during his childhood illnesses. His early life was marked by frequent moves between temples due to his father's work, and he often spent long periods bedridden. He is fifteen years old, stands 171 centimeters tall, and has a slender build with short black hair and dark eyes.

Tanuma possesses a quiet, reserved, and deeply thoughtful personality. He is introspective and often serves as an observer, but he is also remarkably perceptive about the emotions of those close to him, particularly Natsume, often noticing when his friend is hiding his true feelings or trying to protect someone. His primary internal conflict stems from his sense of powerlessness and a fear of being a burden, as his spiritual abilities are far weaker than Natsume's. Despite this, he is incredibly loyal and courageous, consistently pushing through his own physical limitations to offer help and support.

Tanuma’s core motivation is his desire to protect Natsume and not be left behind in the dangerous world of youkai. He strongly resents being called useless or powerless, a sensitivity that arises from his own insecurities. His role in the story is primarily that of a trusted confidant and emotional anchor for Natsume, one of the few people with whom Natsume can be partially honest about his secret life. In The Stone Waker and the Strange Visitor, Tanuma is central to the plot; he is visited daily by a mysterious youkai disguised as a human. While the visitor claims to be harmless, Tanuma’s health slowly deteriorates as a result of these encounters, causing great concern for Natsume. This story directly highlights his vulnerability due to his spiritual sensitivity.

His most significant relationship is with Takashi Natsume. They are best friends who initially bonded over their shared, yet unequal, ability to sense spirits. Natsume is very protective of Tanuma and fears his friend will recklessly endanger himself. Conversely, Tanuma is protective of Natsume and was distressed by the secrets kept between them until Natsume promised to be more open. He is also part of a close-knit group of school friends that includes Atsushi Kitamoto, Satoru Nishimura, and Tooru Taki, the latter also being aware of youkai. He has a wary but familiar relationship with the powerful youkai Madara, who has previously discouraged Tanuma by bluntly stating his limitations.

Throughout the series, Tanuma shows notable development. Initially more passive and physically fragile, he grows more proactive and resilient. His physical symptoms from exposure to youkai, such as headaches, become less frequent, a change he attributes to Natsume’s influence. This is likened to how a pin stuck to a magnet will gain magnetic properties. His desire to be more helpful also grows, and he eventually shows interest in becoming an exorcist to better understand and navigate the spirit world.

Regarding his abilities, Tanuma has a natural but limited form of spiritual perception. Unlike Natsume, who can see youkai clearly, Tanuma can only sense their presence or see them as vague, indistinct shadows. This sensitivity often causes him physical distress, including headaches and nausea, especially in the presence of powerful spiritual auras. On very rare occasions, he can hear youkai speak. He is also more susceptible to being possessed by spirits. However, his tolerance and resilience improve over time through his continued proximity to Natsume and his experiences in the spirit world. Beyond his spiritual traits, he is also known to be able to play the piano and is left-handed.
