Description
Seiji Matoba leads the powerful and feared Matoba exorcist clan, wielding considerable influence. Born the second and youngest son, his extraordinary innate spiritual abilities surpassed most exorcists, securing his position as heir over his older sister, Shinobu Matoba. Her resulting resentment fueled her departure from the clan. The Matobas bear a generational curse: an ancestor promised his right eye to a youkai for aid but broke the vow, leading male clan heads to be targeted for their right eye. Matoba wears an eyepatch over his scarred right eye as a protective talisman, though it compromises his depth perception.

Matoba maintains a coldhearted, rational demeanor. He prioritizes protecting humanity but eliminates humans or youkai obstructing his goals without hesitation. Viewing youkai as disposable tools, he readily sacrifices weaker ones to lure stronger entities. His primary exorcism weapons are a shortbow and arrows, supplemented by sacred sutras, talismans, and shikigami. Vast knowledge of exorcism techniques combined with formidable spiritual power allows him to perceive youkai and execute unerringly precise eliminations, even incapacitating a high-level ayakashi like Madara with a single arrow.

His dynamic with Takashi Natsume significantly shapes his development. After initially mistaking Natsume for a youkai and attempting to strangle him, Matoba becomes intrigued by Natsume's escape. Discovering Natsume is Reiko Natsume's grandson deepens his interest. He repeatedly invites Natsume to join the clan, offering protection and acknowledging his latent power, though Natsume consistently refuses. Matoba exhibits uncharacteristic trust in Natsume—believing his excuse about a lost letter and collaborating on investigations despite ideological clashes. He occasionally intervenes to protect Natsume, such as saving him from a youkai. Their interactions reveal Matoba's complexity: he challenges Natsume's empathetic view of youkai yet displays moments of sentimentality, like sharing personal memories during joint missions.

Interactions with others further define Matoba. He maintains a contentious partnership with exorcist Shuuichi Natori, rooted in mutual teenage distrust, though they cooperate when necessary. His assistant, Nanase, gathers intelligence and informs him of Natsume's heritage. The strained relationship with his sister Shinobu surfaces in brief references, like his remark that she dislikes being kept waiting. He also engages with humans outside exorcism, such as Tooru Taki during memorial services.

Matoba's development shows subtle shifts, particularly through Natsume. He exhibits rare emotional reactions, freezing when Natsume equates human and youkai experiences—challenging Matoba's rigid belief that youkai inherently endanger humans. His loneliness as clan head contrasts sharply with Natsume's supportive network of humans and youkai. This fuels Matoba's fascination, blending a desire to witness the endurance of Natsume's idealism with an unspoken hope for an alternative perspective on coexistence. These layers reveal calculation, vulnerability, and unexpected protectiveness, moving beyond a simple antagonist role.
