Description
Kouji Ibuki began his journey as a childhood friend and classmate of Taishi Miwa and Toshiki Kai during their elementary school days. He initially enjoyed Vanguard, but his memories and emotions were later warped by the Deletors, reshaping him into a formidable antagonist who set out to destroy Vanguard and sever the bonds between fighters and their units. In that earlier phase, he possessed the ability to delete vanguard units outright, a power he lost after being defeated by Kai and Aichi Sendou. The experience left him with a complicated relationship toward the game he once loved, and by the time of the High School Arc Cont., Ibuki is a young man burdened by guilt over his actions during the conflict with Wandering Star Brandt.

His personality reveals a contrast between a guarded, blunt exterior and a deeper sense of responsibility and kindness. The guilt he carries fuels a sincere desire for atonement and pushes him to find a way to engage with Vanguard that does not rely on the destructive power of the Deletors. At his core, Ibuki is a protective soul who, despite past mistakes, genuinely cares about preserving the integrity of the game and the connections it fosters.

In the High School Arc Cont., Ibuki’s internal struggle takes center stage. Plagued by new nightmares and shaken by the weight of his previous actions, he receives a summons to the Tatsunagi Foundation, where he encounters Nome Tatsunagi. There he learns he can perceive a Dark Tower called Sanctuary, a phenomenon that is rewriting the timeline and threatening the world he knows. To set things right, he must travel into the parallel -if- world alongside Suiko Tatsunagi and confront the consequences of a future misstep. This mission forces him to examine his own choices and pushes him beyond the safe confines of conventional cardfighting, as in the -if- timeline physical monsters cannot be defeated solely by traditional battles.

Throughout this arc, Ibuki’s key relationships anchor his development. His shared history with Kai and Miwa remains a quiet but meaningful part of his identity. His confrontation with Aichi in the past taught him the cost of his Deletor-driven path. During his lowest moment, when he intends to discard his deck and quit Vanguard entirely, Leon Sōryū intervenes to challenge his resolve, helping him rediscover a purpose. Later, Ibuki seeks out Tetsu Shinjō and Asaka Narumi to earn a spot on Fukuhara High’s team for the Vanguard Koshien, demonstrating his commitment to re-enter the competitive world on fair terms. In the Koshien finals, he faces Naoki Ishida in an emotionally charged match that stirs deep feelings in others and highlights Ibuki’s transformation.

As a cardfighter, Ibuki wields a Link Joker deck centered on the Messiah series, a strategy built around locking and unlocking his own rearguards to unleash powerful effects. His mastery of this style reflects his tactical mind and his ability to turn constraints into advantages. Over time, his deck evolves to include the unit Genesis Dragon, Excelics Messiah, which can unlock multiple units while boosting his rearguards and retiring opposing forces. Although the raw delete ability he once used is no longer his, his understanding of the deeper, sometimes dangerous, psychic phenomenon known as PSYqualia remains a part of his character, shaping how he reads fights and relates to the emotional side of the game.

Ibuki’s arc in the High School Arc Cont. is one of redemption and self-discovery. He moves from a figure who once erased bonds to someone who strives to protect them, and from a man ready to abandon everything to a fighter who reclaims his place with renewed conviction. His story illustrates that even those who have caused harm can choose a different path, one built on responsibility, trust, and the desire to safeguard the future of the game that once gave him joy.
