Description
Kōji Ibuki's story began in elementary school when he introduced the card game Vanguard to childhood friends Toshiki Kai and Taishi Miwa, viewing it as a symbol of their bond. This friendship shattered when Kai moved away after parental abandonment. Seeking new connections through Vanguard, Ibuki intentionally lost matches to let others win, breeding resentment and isolating him socially. This experience fostered lasting bitterness toward the game, shaping his loner personality.
Years later, alien entities called Deletors from planet Brandt manipulated Ibuki's memories and offered him a "Deletor" archetype Link Joker deck. Each victory with this deck severed opponents' connections to the sentient planet Cray, gradually weakening Earth's link and causing Vanguard cards to vanish. Accepting this arrangement, Ibuki targeted fighters globally to eradicate Vanguard. His actions triggered the Messiah Scramble tournament, organized by Cray's emissary Takuto Tatsunagi to stop him. During the tournament, Ibuki confronted Aichi Sendou and Kai in a 2-versus-1 fight. Possessed by the Deletor leader Oksizz, he nearly won until Harmonics Messiah empowered Aichi to defeat him, breaking the Deletors' control. Afterward, Ibuki wandered the world seeking redemption. Harmonics Messiah then gifted him a purified "Messiah" archetype Link Joker deck—comprising reborn Link Joker units freed from Void's influence—which he accepted out of shared remorse.
During his travels, Ibuki encountered Rive Shindou, who possessed Chrono Dran, a unit from Cray. Rive explained that his former associate Ryuzu Myoujin planned to abuse the time-manipulating Gear Chronicle clan to rewrite history. Tasked by Rive to prepare Rive's son Chrono Shindou to stop Ryuzu, Ibuki infiltrated the Vanguard association as an aide to United Sanctuary branch chief Yuichirou Kanzaki. He secretly sent Chrono Gear Chronicle cards and guided him to Card Capital 2, positioning himself as Chrono's rival and mentor while covertly monitoring Ryuzu. Ibuki later stole Ryuzu's "Depend Cards" from Kanzaki's lab, delivering them to Chrono to awaken Chrono Dran. After Chrono learned Ibuki's role and Rive's survival, Ibuki openly mentored him, culminating in Ryuzu's defeat. These actions led to widespread forgiveness for his Deletor-related crimes.
Following Ryuzu's defeat, Ibuki reformed the Vanguard association to undo Ryuzu's damage. During the U20 tournament, he investigated participant Kazumi Onimaru, who was illegally possessed ("Diffriden") by the Cray unit Stealth Dragon Shiranui. Ibuki and Chrono discovered Shiranui served the Apostles, a group seeking to revive Harmonics Messiah's nemesis Gyze by possessing humans. After Chrono convinced Shiranui to defect, the Apostles targeted Ibuki as Messiah's avatar to prevent interference with Gyze's revival. Ibuki defended Messiah with Chrono's aid and joined the final battle to destroy Gyze.
Ibuki's abilities include mastery of the Deletor deck, which reduces opponents' vanguards' power to zero and nullifies their abilities. His later Messiah deck specializes in locking and unlocking units for strategic benefits. He is also a skilled martial artist, demonstrated by overpowering multiple adversaries, including Shouma Shinonome. In non-anime continuities (manga/reboot), he possesses PSY Qualia, granting supernatural cardfighting prowess.
His personality evolved from a gentle but socially awkward youth to a cold, reserved antagonist during the Deletor incident. Post-redemption, he adopted a more approachable demeanor, particularly around allies like Mamoru Anjou, though he retained analytical bluntness. His philosophy—"a fight reveals everything about a person"—influenced Chrono's approach to Vanguard.
