Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII, the thirteenth bearer of the name Ishikawa Goemon, continues a lineage linked to the historical Japanese bandit. His title "Jusan-daime" implies a succession potentially mirroring theatrical role inheritance traditions over strict biological descent, with franchise interpretations varying. He masters classical Japanese martial arts, excelling in kenjutsu and battōjutsu while wielding the sword Zantetsuken (alternatively called Ryusei). This blade slices through nearly any substance, prompting his signature line, "I have cut yet another worthless object," when targeting inanimate objects instead of living foes.

Proficient in jujutsu, aikido, and karate, he overcomes multiple attackers barehanded. His personality embodies samurai ideals: intense pride in skill, profound shame in failure, and devotion to Japanese customs. These include favoring Japanese cuisine, sake, meditation, enka music, and traditional garments like hakama and fundoshi. Key vulnerabilities encompass susceptibility to deception by apparently innocent women, aversion to modern technology (though adaptation-dependent), and bribes involving Japanese food or calls to defend children.

His relationship with Lupin III’s gang transformed from early hostility. Initial manga portrayals depict him as Lupin’s enemy, hired to assassinate him or guard treasures. After repeated defeats and acknowledging Lupin’s prowess, he switched allegiance, viewing Lupin as a mentor. Anime continuity cemented their partnership through shared adventures, though Goemon retains moral autonomy, sometimes opposing Lupin’s schemes or pledging to deliver his killing blow. He shares mutual warrior respect with marksman Daisuke Jigen, frequently partnering on missions.

Significant growth occurs in the spin-off *Lupin the IIIrd: The Blood Spray of Goemon Ishikawa*. Failing to protect yakuza boss Makio Inaniwa from mercenary Hawk and losing their first duel, Goemon endures harsh training to unlock a "sixth sense"—a precognitive ability to predict opponents’ moves. This culminates in a rematch where he severs Hawk’s arm, proving enhanced mastery and resolving his honor crisis.

Within the team, he operates as the principal close-combat specialist and occasional safe-cracker, contrasting Jigen’s long-range role. His stoic, introverted nature and bushido adherence position him as the "Optimist" or "Phlegmatic" in the crew’s Four-Temperament Ensemble, acting as a foil to Jigen’s cynicism and Lupin’s flamboyance.
