Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII, the thirteenth-generation descendant of the legendary bandit Ishikawa Goemon, upholds his lineage as a master swordsman and occasional thief. Introduced in the manga as a target and later adversary of Lupin III, he relentlessly pursued Lupin after Fujiko Mine—then his girlfriend—exposed Lupin’s infiltration of his clan to steal secrets tied to forging his ancestral sword. Following repeated failures to eliminate Lupin, Goemon recognized Lupin could teach him more than his former masters and defected to join his crew. This loyalty cemented when Lupin orchestrated Goemon’s public vengeance against his uncle’s killers without legal repercussions.

His personality blends fierce pride in swordsmanship with unwavering devotion to Japanese traditions. He dons hakama and fundoshi, favors Japanese cuisine, meditates daily, and observes Buddhist and Shinto rituals. Failures—like shattering his sword Zantetsuken or yielding to weakness—plunge him into deep shame, often driving him to solitary training or meditation. While typically stoic, he occasionally reveals frustration, fear, or comedic vulnerability, especially around women, whom he distrusts yet feels bound to protect. He also falls prey to scams promising enlightenment and mismanages finances.

Goemon excels in martial arts, specializing in kenjutsu, iaido, and jujutsu. His sword Zantetsuken, sheathed in a plain shirasaya scabbard, slices through nearly anything: bullets, steel, or structures. He prefers non-lethal tactics, disarming foes by severing weapons or clothing while declaring, "I have cut yet another worthless object." He resorts to killing only in honorable duels against dishonorable adversaries. Additional skills include unarmed combat, extended breath-holding for diving, and preternatural awareness. Though usually inept with technology, he sporadically adapts, using cellphones or mastering video games.

Within Lupin’s group, his dynamic with Lupin shifts from professional respect to genuine loyalty, though he routinely contests Lupin’s dubious ethics or womanizing. He shares ironclad trust with Jigen, considering him an honorable ally. Interactions with Fujiko remain guarded due to mistrust, though they cooperate when objectives align. Beyond the team, his connections include clansmen like Kikyo—a childhood friend and love interest in *Dragon of Doom*—who betrays him to aid villain Chin Chin Chao in weaponizing a dragon figurine’s alloy, culminating in Goemon destroying her aircraft. Another clansman, Sadachiyo, duels him fatally in *The Secret of the Twilight Gemini*, dying from a fragment of Goemon’s shattered blade.

His character arcs across media probe clashes between duty and self-growth. In *Goemon’s Blood Spray*, failing to shield a yakuza boss from an assassin compels him to restore his honor through grueling training. Narratives like *Lupin III Part V* scrutinize his place in the team—friend or tool?—peaking in a hollow victory over Lupin that yields regret. These threads underscore his enduring struggles with pride, redemption, and the friction between tradition and criminal life.
