TV Special
Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII carries the legacy of his namesake forefather, a historical Japanese bandit and renegade samurai. His signature weapon is the Zantetsuken, an impossibly sharp sword capable of slicing through steel girders, bullets, and vehicles. After cutting such inanimate objects, which he considers unworthy, he typically utters, "Once again, I have cut a worthless object."

Initially an adversary hired to kill Lupin III after Lupin targeted secrets of the Zantetsuken's forging, repeated failures led Goemon to instead join Lupin, viewing him as a valuable mentor. Their alliance in anime adaptations forms through diverse scenarios like overcoming a shared enemy or surviving mutual dangers, solidifying into a professional yet fiercely loyal partnership.

He adheres strictly to traditional Japanese customs, wearing kimono and hakama, practicing meditation, and consuming only Japanese cuisine. This dedication leaves him vulnerable to traps exploiting food or cultural appeals. A master of martial arts including Kenjutsu, Battōjutsu, Jujutsu, and Aikido, he excels at disarming opponents non-lethally. Despite his prowess, he suffers intense shame when his abilities falter, such as the Zantetsuken breaking or succumbing to a weakness.

His personality balances stoic aloofness with moments of deep vulnerability. Shy and distrustful around women, he often freezes or looks away in their presence – a trait adversaries exploit. Conversely, he shows compassion towards children and those in distress, frequently intervening to protect them. He is also prone to financial scams, especially those promising spiritual enlightenment, and mismanages money earned from Lupin's heists.

Largely resistant to modern technology, he struggles with smartphones and vehicles in most portrayals, though he occasionally adapts, using mobile phones or excelling at video games. Later revelations of ninja training add complexity to his samurai identity and explain his acceptance of theft.

In *Lupin III: Italian Game*, a television special reusing footage from *Part 4*, Goemon participates in Lupin's scheme involving Rebecca Rossellini's kidnapping and the Masked Count's contest to steal the Cagliostro inheritance. His role remains consistent, providing crucial swordsmanship support during heists and confrontations without new character development.

Across all media, Goemon's loyalty to Lupin's gang fluctuates; he joins missions selectively, often clashing with Lupin over moral disagreements or Fujiko's involvement. His dynamic with Jigen reflects mutual respect as fellow warriors, frequently pairing them during operations.
