TV Special
Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is the thirteenth-generation descendant of the historical Japanese figure Ishikawa Goemon, conceived as a traditional Japanese counterbalance to the predominantly Western-oriented main cast. His creation drew inspiration from samurai archetypes, potentially influenced by figures like Kyūzō from *Seven Samurai* or the 19th-century swordsman Soshi Okita.

Initially appearing in manga as an adversary to Lupin III, Goemon was tasked with assassinating him after Lupin attempted to steal secrets related to his sword-forging techniques. After repeated failures, he shifted allegiance, recognizing Lupin as a valuable mentor for honing his skills. This transition solidified when Lupin aided him in avenging his uncle's death. Early anime adaptations, like *Part 1 Episode 5*, reworked this origin, depicting Goemon initially manipulated into opposing Lupin before mutual respect led to an alliance. Alternative backstories, such as the 2002 special *Episode 0: First Contact*, presented him seeking the legendary sword Zantetsuken while crossing paths with Lupin, though its canonicity remains ambiguous.

Goemon's personality centers on profound pride in his martial prowess and unwavering adherence to tradition. He burns with shame upon failing a task or when his sword, Zantetsuken, is damaged or compromised, often driving him to solitary meditation or rigorous training to overcome perceived weaknesses. His traditionalism manifests in his attire—a kimono, hakama, and fundoshi—and his refusal to consume non-Japanese cuisine. He practices Buddhism and Shinto, enjoys fishing, noh theater, and enka music, and typically avoids modern technology, though his aptitude varies across media.

Notable vulnerabilities include his susceptibility to women he deems innocent or trustworthy, frequently leading to betrayal or manipulation. Conversely, he reacts with flustered avoidance to overtly seductive situations. He demonstrates intense protectiveness toward children and can be easily bribed or lured with Japanese food. His dynamic with Lupin blends loyalty with exasperation over Lupin's frivolity, particularly regarding women. He shares a bond of mutual respect with Jigen, viewing him as a fellow warrior, while maintaining cautious distrust toward Fujiko Mine due to her duplicitous nature.

As a martial artist, Goemon specializes in kenjutsu, battōjutsu, jujutsu, aikido, and karate. His primary weapon, the sword Zantetsuken, cleaves through virtually any material, including bullets, steel, or vehicles. He typically employs it non-lethally, destroying weapons or objects rather than killing opponents, often remarking, "I have cut yet another worthless object," after such actions. While his combat focus remains his sword, he demonstrates proficiency in other contexts, such as achieving high scores in video games or employing ninja techniques, reflecting training under a ninja sensei.

In *Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid*, Goemon participates in the pursuit of the Mermaid's Scale gemstone, tied to a riddle involving immortality. His role aligns with his established traits, including engagements where his swordsmanship proves critical.
