Description
Rinko Koujiro is a scientist who studied at Toto Institute of Technology in Japan within the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department's Shigemura Lab. At eighteen during her first year, she met nineteen-year-old second-year student Kayaba Akihiko. Their professional collaboration began swiftly, leading Rinko to contribute to Sword Art Online's development while unaware of Kayaba's hidden plans for the game.
When the SAO incident unfolded, Rinko deduced Kayaba's location at a remote mountain cottage. She confronted him alone, intending to end his life but found herself unable to act. Instead, she remained at the cottage for two years, sustaining Kayaba's physical body during his prolonged game immersion. After the incident concluded, police discovered the cottage. Kayaba had perished from permanently digitizing his brain, while Rinko was arrested and held for trial. Before SAO ended, Kayaba implanted a fake long-distance micro bomb near her sternum to simulate coercion. Rinko later described this as the only gift he ever gave her. Released on bail, she was acquitted in March 2025.
Following her acquittal, Kazuto Kirigaya contacted Rinko via email to discuss Kayaba's legacy. They met at a Tokyo coffee shop, where Kazuto sought insights into Kayaba's motivations, establishing a connection that later influenced her actions.
Approximately two years post-SAO, Rinko relocated to San Francisco, California. She declined an invitation from Seijirou Kikuoka for classified FullDive research. On July 1, 2026, Asuna Yuuki emailed Rinko detailing Kirito's critical condition and disappearance. Learning this, Rinko agreed to help locate Kazuto and accepted Kikuoka's invitation. Four days later, on July 5, she traveled with Asuna—disguised as her assistant "Mayumi Reynolds"—to the Ocean Turtle, Rath's offshore facility. There, they witnessed the Soul Translator technology and discovered Kazuto had been covertly transported there for treatment of severe brain damage. Rinko's scientific expertise and knowledge of Kayaba's work proved instrumental in navigating the facility and understanding the project.
During the Ocean Turtle crisis, Rinko collaborated with Asuna and Rath personnel against external threats. Her background in FullDive technology and familiarity with Kayaba's research positioned her to help stabilize the crisis involving the Underworld and its artificial fluctlights. She advocated for ethical considerations in Rath's experiments, particularly concerning artificial intelligences.
Rinko demonstrates loyalty and compassion, evidenced by her dedication to Kayaba during his isolation and her willingness to assist Asuna despite personal risk. Her technical acumen and quiet determination define her actions throughout the SAO incident and Project Alicization.
