TV-Series
Description
Tamaki Kotatsu is a Third Generation pyrokinetic and a Second Class Fire Soldier who originally served in Special Fire Force Company 1 before transferring to Company 8. She is seventeen years old and stands at 156 centimeters tall. Her most defining physical trait is her short black hair with orange-red tips that resemble flames, paired with expressive golden eyes. She typically wears an oversized bunker jacket styled like a dress over black tights and shoes, though she often wears the jacket open with a cropped top underneath.

Tamaki’s personality is vibrant and multifaceted. She is energetic, impulsive, and highly expressive, often reacting to situations with exaggerated emotion. At the same time, she struggles with deep insecurities about her worth as a firefighter, frequently comparing herself to more experienced comrades. She is extremely loyal to those she trusts and possesses a strong sense of duty and empathy, always refusing to abandon her allies even in the face of danger. Her clumsiness is a recurring trait, which she sarcastically refers to as her Lucky Lecher Lure, an involuntary tendency to end up in embarrassing and compromising positions. This phenomenon is initially presented as pure comic relief, but later in the story it is recontextualized as a unique ability that can generate positivity and hope in the collective consciousness of others, making her unexpectedly vital to the wider plot.

Her motivations stem from a genuine desire to protect others, a trait that has been present since childhood. She joined Company 1 as a trainee, hoping to learn from the best. There she placed great trust in Rekka Hoshimiya, whom she admired as a mentor. When Rekka’s true nature as a cruel and manipulative figure was revealed, the betrayal shattered her confidence and forced her to confront her naivety. Following this, she was transferred to Company 8, where she found a more supportive environment that allowed her to rebuild her emotional strength. Her primary drive became proving that she could stand on her own and contribute meaningfully to her team.

In the story, Tamaki serves as both comic relief and a character undergoing significant personal growth. She participates in major battles and missions, often using her agility to support the team, and her arc includes confronting her own feelings of inferiority. A key turning point is her fight against the character known as Assault, where she overcomes her shame and reaffirms her identity as a fighter. Over time, she moves from being a displaced rookie to a dependable member of Company 8.

Her relationships are central to her development. With Shinra Kusakabe, she shares a dynamic of comedic tension and genuine respect; Shinra treats her with kindness and empathy, helping her gain confidence. With Iris, she builds a warm bond of sisterly affection, finding comfort in Iris’s calm presence. Maki Oze acts as both a mentor and friend, guiding Tamaki in combat and personal growth. The most painful relationship was with Rekka Hoshimiya, whose betrayal taught her caution but ultimately reinforced her own moral compass. She also integrates well with the rest of Company 8, including Captain Obi and Lieutenant Hinawa, learning to respect different leadership styles.

Tamaki’s Ignition Ability is called Nekomata. When activated, she envelops herself in pink flames that manifest as cat ears, two forked tails, and claws on her fingertips. This greatly enhances her agility, speed, balance, and reflexes, allowing her to run on all fours and perform acrobatic maneuvers. She can use her forked tails to generate powerful blasts of fire strong enough to break through walls, restrain enemies, or propel herself into the air. Despite her formidable potential, her clumsiness sometimes hinders her combat performance, though she gradually gains better control over her powers as the series progresses. Her Lucky Lecher Lure is not a controllable ability but an involuntary phenomenon that becomes narratively significant as a source of hope in the later stages of the story.
