Description
Dr. Giovanni is a major antagonist known as a mad scientist who serves as the Battalion Commander of the 3rd Special Fire Brigade while secretly acting as a key member of the Evangelist's faction, also known as the White-Clad. He is an older man, fifty-one years of age, who consistently hides his face behind a beaked plague doctor mask and wears a black trench coat or a white cloak with cross patterns. His visual design is meant to be unsettling, reinforcing his identity as a deranged and plague-like presence.
In the past, Dr. Giovanni was once a disciple of Vulcan Joseph’s grandfather, placing him within Vulcan’s trusted inner circle. On the same day that he left the workshop, both Vulcan’s grandfather and father became Infernals and died, strongly implicating him in their deaths. Following this, he betrayed his mentor to join Haijima Industries, a powerful corporation that controls the 3rd Brigade. In recent times, he has used his influence within Haijima to have merchants blacklist Vulcan, depriving the young inventor of materials and crippling his progress.
Giovanni’s personality is defined by extreme caution, high pride, and a spiteful, obsessive nature. He is a methodical planner who prefers to overprepare, describing his approach as checking and rechecking the stone bridge endlessly before crossing it. He maneuvers behind the scenes by manipulating supply chains, pulling corporate strings, and planting spies. However, this calculated calmness is a façade that crumbles when events stray beyond his predictions; when surprised, he loses composure and panics violently, revealing a manic and unstable core. Once his true allegiance is exposed, he displays fanatical devotion to the Evangelist, dismissing individual human life as expendable in the pursuit of a second cataclysm. He is deeply manipulative and abusive toward his subordinates, using threats and psychological control to ensure obedience.
His primary motivation is an obsession with the power source of the Tokyo Empire, the Amaterasu reactor, and specifically the key to it that is held by Vulcan Joseph’s family. He fiercely opposes Vulcan and relentlessly targets him to obtain this key, believing it will advance the Evangelist’s apocalyptic goals. He is also driven by a scientific curiosity to reach the otherworldly realm known as Adolla, pushing his experiments to grotesque extremes to achieve this.
In his role in the story, Giovanni initially operates under the cover of a legitimate Haijima-backed officer. He attends a conference of Fire Force captains, where he suggests that Shinra Kusakabe, the possessor of the Adolla Burst, be placed under his protection, though this is rejected over concerns he would experiment on the boy. He later orchestrates a direct attack on Vulcan’s workshop. After a long-term preparation involving tightening supply chains and planting spies, he systematically breaks Vulcan down mentally and physically. He shoots Vulcan’s young apprentice, Yu, to force compliance and destroys Vulcan’s cherished possessions when he resists. After securing the Amaterasu key, he disappears from regular Fire Brigade operations and moves fully into the shadows as an active member of the Evangelist’s group.
A key relationship is his deep enmity with Vulcan Joseph, which has roots in their shared past as master and apprentice. Because Vulcan is one of the few people who has seen Giovanni’s true face, Giovanni has a detailed understanding of the young inventor’s history and weaknesses. He also has a manipulative relationship with his subordinate Lisa Isaribe, known as Feeler, whom he uses as a hostage and tool, threatening her life to coerce Vulcan into shooting Captain Obi.
Dr. Giovanni is a Second Generation pyrokinetic, meaning he can control external flames rather than generate his own. He uses this ability to remotely manipulate mechanical arms and specialized equipment that he has built, turning his technology into deadly weapons. His true power, however, comes from his relentless self-experimentation. He repeatedly modifies his own body, using it as a testbed for cybernetics and biotechnology, steadily abandoning his human form. In his quest to approach Adolla, he integrates abilities from mysterious beings called Insects, which are regarded as creatures of Adolla. These modifications grant him powers such as dragonfly compound eyes for wide-angle vision, moth hair pencils for enhanced sensory detection, and the ability to emit a chemical weapon-like gas similar to a bombardier beetle. His experiments culminate in the ability to disperse his body into a swarm of fire bugs for evasion and, most critically, to transfer his consciousness into other bodies using parasitic bugs, allowing him to prolong his life by jumping from host to host. After his original body is critically damaged, he successfully transfers himself into the body of Yu, possessing the boy and using this new form to lock down key systems and trigger a catastrophic disaster. His reign of terror is only brought to a final end when Arthur Boyle, driven into a furious rage, incinerates him completely.
