TV-Series
Description
Rinko Kojiro, a scientist and former collaborator of Akihiko Kayaba, studied alongside him at Toto University's Shigemura Lab within the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department. She specialized in advanced virtual reality research, contributing to the development of Sword Art Online and later utilizing Kayaba's data to create the Medicuboid medical device.
During the SAO incident, Rinko deduced Kayaba's physical location and confronted him at his mountain cottage. Though initially intending to stop him, she instead assisted in maintaining his physical condition during his extended game dives. Authorities arrested her after Kayaba's death, but she was acquitted when they discovered a fake micro bomb implanted near her sternum—Kayaba's deceptive measure to portray her as his coerced accomplice.
Years later, Rinko relocated to California for research at the California Institute of Technology. In July 2026, she received an urgent email from Asuna Yuuki seeking help to locate the comatose Kazuto Kirigaya (Kirito). Rinko agreed, contacting Seijirou Kikuoka to gain access to the Ocean Turtle, a marine research facility operated by his organization, Rath.
To infiltrate Ocean Turtle, Rinko disguised Asuna as her assistant "Mayumi Reynolds." Upon arrival, Kikuoka revealed Project Alicization's objectives: developing artificial fluctlights within the simulated Underworld and treating Kirito's brain damage using Soul Translator (STL) technology. Rinko provided essential scientific expertise on the STL's operation and implications.
She maintained a consistent ethical stance toward artificial intelligence. Unlike Kikuoka—who initially viewed fluctlights as expendable tools—Rinko acknowledged their potential for human-like sentience, aligning with Asuna's perspective on A.I. rights. Rinko remained actively involved in safeguarding Underworld's inhabitants during the crisis instigated by external forces.
Her technical acumen and moral convictions positioned her as a stabilizing influence within Rath, balancing military applications of technology with ethical considerations. Her actions consistently committed to protecting both human lives and emerging digital consciousnesses.
