Description
Ruth began as Ulysse, a church guard dog in Scotland protecting graveyards from grave robbers and spirits. He shared a deep bond with his owner Isabel, viewing her as a sister. After Isabel was killed by a carriage, he stayed by her grave, believing she would awaken. His profound loyalty and grief, combined with dying on consecrated ground, transformed him into a benevolent church grim—a fae guardian bound to sacred spaces. This transition made him mistakenly believe he was human for centuries.
He first encountered Chise Hatori when a malicious spirit attacked her in his graveyard. Intervening to protect her caused him to lose consciousness; he later told Chise his past, noting her resemblance to Isabel. During this, the sorcerer's apprentice Alice tried capturing him for Joseph/Cartaphilus, who sought to add him to a chimera. Chise stopped this by incapacitating Alice and confronting Joseph directly. When Chise shielded Alice from Joseph's chimera—partially composed of Isabel's reanimated corpse—Ulysse chose to become Chise's familiar to avoid absorption into the chimera. Chise formalized their pact, renaming him Ruth to signify his new identity and purpose.
As Chise's familiar, Ruth shares a mental and emotional link, perceiving her thoughts, dreams, and physical state. This bond ties their lifespans together. He acts as her protector and confidant, often voicing her unspoken emotions. Ruth appears primarily as a large black Irish Wolfhound-like dog nearly Chise's height, or as a humanoid with light brown skin, wavy black hair, and red eyes mirroring his canine form. His human guise wears gray and black clothing. He retains canine instincts like chasing small animals and can manipulate shadows to hide or travel through them. Additional abilities include breathing fire and enhanced strength for confronting powerful entities like chimeras.
Ruth treats Chise as both a sister and a charge, showing unwavering loyalty and vigilance. He remains suspicious of outsiders interested in her, reflecting his protective nature. Throughout their journey, including enrollment at the College and threats like the Shishigari, he consistently prioritizes Chise's safety. His development involves reconciling his past with Isabel and his present role, acknowledging his identity as a church grim while maintaining dedication to Chise. He persists as her steadfast companion, emphasizing their familial bond over a master-servant dynamic.
Folklore notes church grims traditionally originate from animals sacrificed during church constructions and buried alive to guard the grounds eternally; they are typically benevolent guardians. The series adapts this lore, with Ruth's self-sacrificial loyalty enabling his transformation instead of a ritualistic burial.
