Description
Megumi Tadokoro is a student of the 92nd Generation at Totsuki Culinary Academy and a resident of the Polar Star Dormitory. She is a petite girl with long dark blue hair styled into twin braids, yellow eyes, and a slender frame. She typically wears the standard Totsuki uniform or a simple white chef’s jacket, often accessorizing with a flower hairpin on the right side of her bangs. She stands 154 centimeters tall, and her measurements are recorded as 79-55-81. Originating from a small port town in the Tohoku region, her family runs a traditional Japanese inn and restaurant called Shoukeien.

Megumi possesses a gentle, kind, and honest personality, but she is also extremely timid and clumsy. Her defining character flaw is severe stage fright and demophobia, a fear of crowds, which causes her to panic and make simple mistakes under pressure despite possessing considerable culinary talent. When nervous, she has a distinct habit of tracing the kanji for person (人) on her palm and pretending to swallow it to calm herself. She also tends to revert to her native Tohoku dialect when flustered or overwhelmed. At the beginning of her high school career, these anxieties led to poor academic performance, causing her to rank at the very bottom of her class and face the threat of expulsion if she received another failing grade.

Her primary motivation is to become a skilled chef to make her family proud and eventually return to her hometown to take over and help run her mother’s ryokan. This goal is deeply tied to her cooking philosophy, which centers on hospitality. Unlike chefs who focus on technical precision or flavor complexity, Megumi’s strength lies in creating warm, comforting dishes that evoke nostalgia and a sense of familial love in those who eat them.

Megumi’s role in the story is closely tied to that of Soma Yukihira. Initially hoping to avoid him due to his brash declaration at the entrance ceremony, she was paired with him as a partner for their first class. After Soma’s quick thinking saved their sabotaged dish and earned them an A grade, she became his closest friend, assistant, and primary partner throughout the series. Their relationship is a catalyst for her development; Soma’s unwavering confidence and creativity inspire her to break through her self-imposed limits. She learns a hand-clapping technique from him to relieve stress and begins to gain confidence by observing his cooking methods.

Several key events mark her growth. During a training camp, a challenge from the elite alumnus Kojirou Shinomiya led to a Shokugeki where Soma fought in her defense. Though Megumi lost the duel, her dish, filled with her signature hospitality, moved Shinomiya to tears and allowed her to stay at the academy, marking her first major victory of self-confidence. In the Autumn Election, she proved her abilities by advancing to the quarterfinals, expertly preparing her hometown’s signature goosefish dish and earning the respect of the school’s director. She later formed a close friendship with Erina Nakiri during a Stagiaire internship, where her sharp observations about customer service impressed the usually critical heiress. She eventually earns a seat on the Elite Ten Council as the Tenth Seat and travels the world to refine her skills further, developing techniques to enhance the inherent flavors of ingredients.

In terms of notable abilities, Megumi excels in local and everyday cuisine, particularly vegetable and fish dishes. Her most famous technical skill is the Hanging Cut, a difficult traditional method for preparing goosefish that she learned from local fishermen as a child to save her family’s inn. Her true specialty, however, is her ability to infuse her cooking with heartfelt hospitality. This ability is so potent that it can trigger powerful emotional responses, making her a unique and formidable chef despite her unassuming nature. Beyond cooking, she is also an expert table tennis player, known as the Leaping Rabbit of Tohoku, and enters a fierce, focused state when she plays.
