Shinnosuke Nohara, also called Shin-chan, is a five-year-old kindergarten student at the center of his own adventures. He lives with his parents, Hiroshi and Misae, his baby sister Himawari, and the family dog, Shiro. His face is marked by thick eyebrows, a trait inherited from his father, though his overall appearance and stubborn disposition align more closely with his mother.
His personality presents a mix of childish impulses and unexpected maturity. He is brutally honest, endlessly curious, and operates with a complete lack of shame, which leads to frequent social missteps. These include his habit of pulling down his pants to perform a dance he calls the "Buttock Alien" or "buri buri" dance, often accompanied by an original song. He is also known for his creative misuse of language, offering malapropisms like saying "promotion" instead of "promise" and mixing up common greetings.
Beneath his troublesome exterior, he shows moments of selfless kindness. He has saved a frog from traffic in the rain, dirtying his last clean set of clothes, and given away his own money to a friend despite knowing he would be scolded. On a trip to Australia, he perceptively noticed a friend’s sadness and kindly arranged for the boy's father to play ball with him. He is protective of his younger sister, Himawari, and the two often bond over mischief, while he maintains a close, teasing relationship with his mother.
His interests are those of an imaginative young child. He is an avid fan of the superhero show "Action Kamen" and never misses an episode. He loves the snack "Chocobis" and has a strong aversion to green peppers. A recurring gag involves his chronic lateness for the school bus, which usually forces his mother to transport him on her bicycle.
A notorious aspect of his character is his attraction to older women, a trait shared with his father and grandfather. He frequently flirts with them using adult-like dialogue, which typically results in punishment. The only female he consistently pursues is a college student named Nanako Oohara, in front of whom he attempts to act like a brilliant boy to win her favor. He shows no interest in girls his own age.
Within his Futaba Kindergarten friend group—Toru Kazama, Nene Sakurada, Masao Sato, and Bo Suzuki—he is the primary source of chaos. Together, they form the "Kasukabe Defence Force." He shares a close, often antagonistic friendship with the intelligent and well-mannered Kazama, whom he considers his best friend despite Kazama's frequent denials.
In the narrative of "Dengeki! Buta no Hizume Daisakusen," Shinnosuke and his friends are drawn into an international conflict after being taken hostage by the secret organization Pig's Hoof. Their kidnapping occurs after a secret agent named Orioke hides on their houseboat while fleeing. The group is captured, escapes an airship over the Tibetan plateau, and eventually locates the Pig's Hoof headquarters near Lake Manasarovar.
There, he becomes instrumental in thwarting the plans of the leader, Mouse, who aims to conquer the world using a computer virus modeled after Shinnosuke's own imaginary character, Buriburizaemon. When other methods fail, Shinnosuke is侵入d into the computer program to communicate with the virus directly. He tells Buriburizaemon a story about its own adventure, which pacifies the entity and causes the virus to delete itself, saving the world's computer systems.
His background notes that the character is based on Shinnosuke Nikaido from Yoshito Usui's earlier work, "Darakuya Store Monogatari." He is a member of the Kasukabe Defense Force and has his own imaginary character called Buriburizaemon. He displays unexpected talent in kendo, surfing, fishing, baseball, and football, and is noted to be a good singer. He learned photography from his aunt, Musae. A running observation is that he often sighs and makes comments as if he were a weary adult, leading his friends to frequently remind him that he is, in fact, a child.
