Description
Simon originates from an underground village, initially working as a timid digger. His discovery of the Core Drill and the mecha Lagann ignites humanity's liberation struggle, reaching the surface world. Following the death of his brother figure Kamina, he overcomes despair through his bond with Nia, Lordgenome's daughter, eventually defeating the Spiral King and assuming leadership of the surface civilization.
Seven years after Lordgenome's defeat, Simon serves as Supreme Commander of Kamina City, overseeing an era of peace and technological progress. He carves a massive statue of Kamina, embodying his legacy and humanity's aspirations. Despite his leadership role, he displays weariness with bureaucratic duties, contrasting his earlier battlefield dynamism. His poetic marriage proposal to Nia causes temporary confusion due to her literal interpretation before she accepts, highlighting their deep connection and individual identities.
The Anti-Spirals intervene when humanity's population reaches one million, activating their annihilation protocol. They transform Nia into their messenger, revealing her creation as an Anti-Spiral entity. She announces the Moon's collision course with Earth, blaming Simon for provoking the catastrophe. Her transformation and departure into an Anti-Spiral mecha devastate Simon. Following Nia's abduction, political upheaval leads to Simon's imprisonment. During incarceration, conversations with Viral expose Simon's fear of his own escalating Spiral Power, which he associates with Lordgenome's destructive potential, highlighting his awareness of power's corrupting dangers.
Regaining freedom, Simon reunites Team Dai-Gurren to confront the Anti-Spirals in space. The battle culminates in creating Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, a universe-sized mecha formed through collective Spiral Power and Lordgenome's sacrifice. After this mecha falls, Simon faces the Anti-Spiral in a final, personal confrontation without any mecha, utilizing only his Spiral Power-enhanced fists, demonstrating ultimate self-reliance and rejection of dependence on external power.
Rescuing Nia carries the consequence of her existence fading, as her life force is tied to the Anti-Spirals. They marry in a brief ceremony, sharing a kiss before she vanishes. Simon accepts her death, refusing to use Spiral Power to resurrect her, upholding the natural order. He relinquishes his Core Drill to Gimmy, signifying the end of his warrior role, and departs to wander the world anonymously. He aids communities as a humble driller, embodying his belief that his purpose was merely to "dig the tunnel to the future" for others to build upon.
