Description
Armin Arlert grew up in Shiganshina District, relying on childhood friends Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman for protection against frequent bullying. His grandfather's forbidden book ignited a lifelong fascination with exploring the world beyond the walls, including oceans and ice fields, though this curiosity led others to brand him a heretic. Following the Titan destruction of Shiganshina, he became a refugee and eventually joined the 104th Training Corps alongside Eren and Mikasa. Despite low physical combat rankings, his exceptional strategic intellect earned him recognition.

His military service revealed a complex personality combining high intelligence, deep curiosity, and empathy with chronic self-doubt and a willingness for self-sacrifice. He believed overcoming monstrous threats required abandoning humanity, yet struggled emotionally after taking lives, such as killing to save Jean Kirstein and later expressing remorse. His moral relativism rejected absolute definitions of "good" or "evil," viewing them as subjective. This worldview enabled him to devise morally ambiguous strategies, like emotionally manipulating Bertholdt Hoover with false tales of Annie Leonhart's torture.

Armin's tactical brilliance proved crucial in pivotal battles. He formulated the plan to seal Trost District's breach using Eren's Titan strength, identified Annie Leonhart as the Female Titan through behavioral analysis and gear discrepancies, and masterminded Erwin Smith's diversionary charge at Shiganshina. During that conflict, he sacrificed himself as a decoy against the Colossal Titan, suffering near-fatal burns. Captain Levi chose to revive him with a Titan serum instead of Erwin, leading Armin to inherit the Colossal Titan by consuming Bertholdt.

Gaining Titan powers resulted in physical changes, including a taller stature and shorter haircut. His Colossal Titan form stood 60 meters tall with skinless musculature, an exposed ribcage, distinctive lips, and a visible windpipe, capable of explosive transformations like the one that destroyed Marley's harbor fleet. He grappled with survivor's guilt over Erwin's death and inherited memories from Bertholdt that intensified his empathy for crystallized Annie Leonhart, whom he visited regularly. Their relationship evolved into mutual affection, with Annie later acknowledging his persistent kindness.

Succeeding Hange Zoë as the 15th Commander of the Survey Corps, Armin faced leadership anxiety and indecisiveness. He spearheaded the raid on Liberio, using his Titan transformation strategically but emerging tearfully from the aftermath. During the Rumbling, he confronted Eren Yeager in the Paths dimension, attempting negotiation through shared memories before ultimately joining the alliance to stop him. In the battle's aftermath, he claimed responsibility for Eren's death to protect Mikasa and facilitate peace negotiations, reflecting his recurring pattern of assuming guilt for circumstances beyond his full control.

Armin maintained significant relationships throughout his journey. His bond with Eren and Mikasa centered on their shared dream of seeing the ocean, achieved in the Season 3 finale. Despite later conflicts, Eren trusted Armin's intellect to guide humanity's future. With allies like Jean and Connie, Armin demonstrated loyalty, volunteering to stay behind during a horse shortage. His diplomatic efforts extended post-war, where he advocated for peace as a self-described "burden-bearer" alongside the surviving alliance members.
