Description
Levi Ackermann entered life in the squalid Underground City, born to Kuchel Ackermann. His mother, a prostitute, died while he was still young. Found living in filth by his maternal uncle, Kenny Ackermann, Levi was taken in. Kenny taught him harsh survival skills, knife combat, and violent behavior before eventually abandoning him, deeming the lessons sufficient for Levi to endure alone. Levi later formed a criminal gang with Furlan Church and Isabel Magnolia, utilizing stolen vertical maneuvering equipment for their heists.

During one such operation, Levi and his companions were apprehended by Erwin Smith of the Survey Corps. Erwin offered them clemency on the condition they join the Corps. Tragedy struck on their first expedition beyond the Walls when Titans killed Furlan and Isabel. This profound loss deeply affected Levi, cementing his dedication to the Survey Corps under Erwin's command.

Levi earns the title of humanity's strongest soldier through his unmatched combat prowess, especially with vertical maneuvering gear. He commands the Special Operations Squad, assigned to protect and monitor Eren Yeager. Physically, he is short, with black undercut hair, steel blue eyes, and a youthful face. He later sustains significant injuries, including facial scars and the loss of two fingers from a Thunder Spear explosion.

His personality is marked by an obsession with cleanliness, often wiping blood from his blades even during battle. Emotionally reserved, blunt, and intimidating, he rarely displays vulnerability. Yet, he intensely values human life, despising unnecessary casualties. He forms deep loyalty towards those he respects, like Erwin, but exhibits open disdain for authority figures outside his circle, such as the Military Police.

Levi's backstory illuminates the origins of his traits. The "Bad Boy" spin-off depicts him awakening his dormant Ackerman powers during a childhood attempt to retrieve his mother's tea set from criminals. After instinctively killing them, he vowed never to hold cups by their handles again when one broke, explaining his unique tea-drinking posture. His preoccupation with cleanliness stems from memories of his mother's elegance amidst the Underground's filth.

He carries the will of fallen comrades, fortifying his resolve against Titans. The later revelation that Titans are transformed humans deeply disturbs him. He shows no mercy to enemies of humanity, displaying ruthlessness in acts like torturing the Female Titan or threatening Historia Reiss to assume the throne. Despite his independence in combat, he follows Erwin's orders without question, bound by shared ideals.

A pivotal moment arises when Levi chooses to save Armin Arlert over Erwin, allowing Erwin to die to end his suffering. This decision underscores Levi's commitment to enabling the future of the next generation. Later, severely injured, he focuses intensely on fulfilling his promise to kill Zeke Yeager, ultimately succeeding.

His relationship with Kenny resurfaces during the Uprising Arc, revealing their familial tie and shared Ackerman heritage. Levi rejects Kenny's philosophy that violence is the only power that matters, reinforcing his own chosen path. A distant kinship exists with Mikasa Ackerman, though they rarely interact. Levi survives the series' conflicts, continuing to honor the legacy of his fallen comrades.
